Introduction

Passage Colossians 1:1-12

How to Pray

“We thank God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you”
Paul starts with God
This puts everything into perspective
Read Colossians 1:13-22
We can pray because God is glorious, sovereign, and can actually do something about our prayers.
We can pray for big things because God is big and glorious.
If all of your prayers came true would the world be any different? Would people’s lives and eternities be changed? We dishonor God when we pray nothing but small requests because it shows that we don’t believe He can do anything about our big and seemingly impossible prayers.

Paul prays for the edification of the saints

He is praying that the saints and the church they make up would be built up and encouraged in the faith for the glory of God
Do you often pray for your home church, whether it’s PV or another church? Do you ever pray for other churches? Paul does, and I think we should too.

Paul’s prayers are assuredly evangelistic

He is thanking God that the people in the church of Colossae have heard the gospel and have trusted in Jesus. It would not be any stretch of the imagination to say that Paul has prayed for the salvation of the people in the church, especially with his great concern for the lost.
I will be with you as your God and you will be my people (delayed response in Scripture)
God doesn’t always answer our prayers as we might expect
When you pray you are waging war on Satan through God (decide whether or not to include this)
Boldness, Spirit Intercedes for us
