A Humbling Experience

by Dr. Paul Chappell

“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

2 Corinthians 4:5-7

Yesterday, we talked about becoming like Christ by being changed into His image. We saw that Christ desires to bring us closer to Him and to change us to be more like Him. It does not matter what we have been through or where we are—any one of us can come to Christ and be changed into His image! Today we will see that coming before God and spending time with Him is a humbling experience.

First, as we spend time with Christ we will see ourselves for who we truly are. When we see ourselves as the sinners we are, we will realize that we fall short of God’s glory. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” It is a humbling experience to realize that we are only sinners saved by His grace!

Second, as we spend time in God’s Word, we will see who God is. God is the Creator of the world and the one who rules everything! But He also is the one who desires to meet us each day and fellowship with us. Psalm 8:3-4 says, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” God controls the universe; yet He is concerned with us. God wants to spend time with us! This is truly a humbling experience!

Last, when we spend time with Christ we will see what He did for us. Christ came down to us and died for us while we were lost in sin. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” What a humbling thought! God came to us—unworthy sinners—to provide salvation for us.

Christ not only died for those who loved Him, but He gave His life for those who despised and rejected Him. He gave His life for all the sins of the world. Mark 3:28 says, “Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme.” Anyone who comes to Him can receive forgiveness of their sins! Christ loves the whole world.

It is humbling to realize that even though we are only sinners saved by grace, God, in all His glory, loved us and sent His Son to die for us. There is no way we could ever come to Christ, yet He came to us. Not only did Christ come to provide salvation for us, but He also desires to fellowship with us. God, the Creator of the world, desires to meet with us each day! What a humbling thought!

Are you spending time with Christ each day? Christ came to us to provide salvation for us and He desires for us to come to Him each day to fellowship with Him. Take time to fellowship with Christ right now. Seek Him through His Word and let Him draw you closer to Him today.
