I was in the kitchen with my mom after church one Sunday… my little sister Ginger came into the kitchen crying. I felt relieved because I had done nothing to her this time to make her cry… or so I thought. My mom asked what was wrong and she shared that they learned in church that day about those who sin will die! True statement by the way. Through the sobbing my mom asked why this was making her cry… her response “Well, Jed sins and now he is going to die!” I was speechless.
Today I want you to consider your own sin.
Romans 3:23 states (SINNED & FALL SHORT)
Romans 3:23 NASB95
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(SINNED) 88.289 ἁμαρτάνω; ἁμαρτίαa, ας f: to act contrary to the will and law of God—‘to sin, to engage in wrongdoing, sin.’
(FALL SHORT) 13.21 ὑστερέωd: to fail in some measure to attain some state or condition—‘to fail to attain, to not attain, to be behind in.’
Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains (electronic ed. of the 2nd edition., Vol. 1, p. 151). New York: United Bible Societies.Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 88.289 ἁμαρτάνω; ἁμαρτία, ας
“ALL SIN”= missing the mark or falling short / taking the wrong path or road, or divination
The New Bible Dictionary makes a good statement pertaining to sin:
The definition of sin, however, is not to be derived simply from the terms used in Scripture to denote it. The most characteristic feature of sin in all its aspects is that it is directed against God (cf. Ps. 51:4; Rom. 8:7). Any conception of sin which does not have in the forefront the contradiction which it offers to God is a deviation from the biblical representation. The common notion that sin is selfishness betrays a false assessment of its nature and gravity. Essentially, sin is directed against God, and this perspective alone accounts for the diversity of its form and activities. It is a violation of that which God’s glory demands and is, therefore, in its essence the contradiction of God.
Psalm 51:4 NASB95
Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.
Romans 8:7 NASB95
because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,
You and I cannot expect to have a right view of God if we fail to have a right view of sin!
We are going to consider the birth of sin today in our passage of Genesis 3. However, before we go there I want our minds in the context of James 1:13-17
James 1:13–17 NASB95
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

The Garden Setting

The garden in which God places man in is perfect… “VERY GOOD” Please note several things as we go into this… Genesis 2:15
Genesis 2:15 NASB95
Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.
There is WORK / RESPONSIBILITY here given to Adam!
To KEEP= there is a protecting / oversight / a guardianship given here to Adam
Note also that Genesis 2:16-17 is spoken to Adam…
Genesis 2:16–17 NASB95
The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
In Genesis 2:18 Eve is a helper for Adam… there is the responsibility of leadership still given to Adam! (Not a greater importance but role)
As we look at Genesis 3 we see that sin cannot be blamed on environment or heredity, as James states it comes from “our own lust

The Temptation

Genesis 3:1 introduces Satan…
Genesis 3:1 NASB95
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
SATAN… is a master at disguising himself! And for those who may wonder if it is Satan look at Revelation 20:2
Revelation 20:2 NASB95
And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;
Satan's words here will bring chaos and death
Contrast this with the words of God that brought order and life!
The writer is very clear to identify his mask as one that God had given man authority over… the temptation is coming from a subordinate!
Satan questions God’s Word and twist it!!!
This is by the way what he still does today!
Immediately causing one to think God is withholding from you good!
Look at Eve’s response… Genesis 3:2 -3
Genesis 3:2–3 NASB95
The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”
Several observations to her response that we still do today...
She does not fully call sin… well SIN!!! It’s just a tree… one tree… in the midst.
What about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil!!!!!
Next she misquotes God!
The writer here is very clear to identify a difference, an adding to what God said.
This could be on her or Adam but this is not what God stated...
Contrast that with when Satan tempted Jesus… He used the Word accurately
You and I need to know God’s Word!
You and I need to know the TRUTH
TRUTH
Satan counters her response seeing the chinks in the armor… the weakness of understanding and draws to her lust… Genesis 3:4-5 and he ATTACKS THE VERY CHARACTER OF GOD!
Genesis 3:4–5 NASB95
The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Satan calls God a liar
Satan states God is holding back / keeping something away from you
Satan offers a counterfeit when they were already in possession of the real thing… “like God” / “made in His Image”
Satan is full of counterfeits: happiness, fulfillment, joy, riches, meaning and purpose… the list goes on
Genesis 3:6 is a summary of what James warns his readers of…
Genesis 3:6 NASB95
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Temptation comparison… Genesis 3 & Matthew 4
Appeal to physical appetite
You may eat of any tree (3:1). vs You may eat by changing stones to bread (4:3).
Appeal to personal gain
You will not die (3:4). vs You will not hurt Your foot (4:6).
Appeal to power or glory
You will be like God (3:5). vs You will have all the world’s kingdoms (4:8–9).
ADAM ATE TOO!
He was given authority / responsibility and failed
He was to KEEP… protect guard and he failed when evil approached.
Look at what happens next… Genesis 3:7-13
Genesis 3:7–13 NASB95
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Adam blames Eve… Eve blames the serpent… and the serpent doesn't have a leg to stand on!
Did you catch those last words… “the serpent DECEIVED me!”
No wonder James cries out to his readers… “do not be deceived!
Satan’s promises never come true. Wisdom is never attained by disobeying God’s Word. Instead the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov. 1:7).
Adam… placed into a perfect garden failed to his own lust and desires… there would one day be another garden
The Second Garden
The Second Adam
Luke 22:42 NASB95
saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
Communion
Bread
Cup
You and I cannot expect to have a right view of God if we fail to have a right view of sin! Our sin cost the death of the perfect Son of God. Our sin in total contradiction with God… and He loved us enough to send His Son!
