Jesus' Prayer for His Disciples - Pt 2 John 17:13-19 Outline for Jesus' High Priestly Prayer 1. Jesus prayed for Himself (1-5) 2. Jesus prayed for His disciples (6-19) 3. Jesus prayed for Us (20-26) 1. The Foundation of Jesus' Prayer (6-10) - The disciples are the chosen gift of the Father to the Son (6a,9-10) - The disciples freely chose to obey the Gospel (6b, 7-8) 2. The Requests of Jesus' Prayer (11-19) -Jesus prayed for their spiritual protection (11-16) Hebrews 12:2 - 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. -Jesus prayed for their sanctification for mission (17-19) Romans 12:2 - 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Knowing and obeying God's word is the only way to withstand and triumph over the attacks of our enemy. 1 Peter 5:8-10 - 8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. 10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. Ephesians 6:10-12 - 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. We are called to engage the world with the Gospel not to withdraw from it. 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 - 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Do not expect to experience the joy of the Lord if you are not obeying the Lord. Jesus prayed to His Father for His disciples in order to ensure their protection and their mission to the world.
