Call to God - vs.1-2

He calls to Jehovah and pleads for his “Rock” to not be deaf; this Hebrew parallelism emphasizes the dependable nature of God
“Deaf” and “silent” speaks not only of God hearing our prayers, but responding in a manner that we can take note, so as not to lose hope
He repeats the call while lifting his hands to the holy sanctuary (a place David could not enter)

Cry for Justice - vs.3-5

Dragging came from the practice of a hunter using a camouflaged or thrown net and dragging the prey to slaughter
David calls for separation in judgment - Matt 13:28-30
Matthew 13:28–30 ESV
He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”
This judgment is on those who openly peaceful, while inwardly destructive - 2 Sam 3:27; 20:9-10
2 Samuel 3:27 ESV
And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he struck him in the stomach, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
2 Samuel 20:9–10 ESV
And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.
David calls for God to deal with them in kind - Lev 24:17-23
Leviticus 24:17–23 ESV
“Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death. Whoever takes an animal’s life shall make it good, life for life. If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him, fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him. Whoever kills an animal shall make it good, and whoever kills a person shall be put to death. You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the Lord your God.” So Moses spoke to the people of Israel, and they brought out of the camp the one who had cursed and stoned him with stones. Thus the people of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.
This is not a personal vengeance, but indignation that they do not submit to God’s sovereignty

Praise for Answered Prayer - vs.6-9

David repeats his call in prayer, but this time in the affirmative as he acknowledges God’s positive response
Jehovah is his ability to fight because he trusts in God and is sustained - 1 Sam 17:45-47
1 Samuel 17:45–47 ESV
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
This song is a song of exultation to praise God
Yet, this blessing extends to all of God’s people, the chosen ones - Deut 10:15
Deuteronomy 10:15 ESV
Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.
He concludes with a call to God to continue to be their shepherd who saves His sheep - John 10:11-16
John 10:11–16 ESV
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
We are appalled by the evil of this world, and we pray that God will bring justice. As David did, let your confident prayer lift your spirit in praise for the justice that we know is determined. May God never be deaf and silent to us.
