Recap

What did we talk about last week?

Introduction/Tension

What is God’s standard?
Big Question
What do we have to do so we can meet God’s standard?

Jesus fulfills the law

Let’s look to scripture Matthew 5:17-20
Verse 17 -

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

What is the law and the prophets?
Why is the Old Testament important?

Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left,

What is Jesus saying in this verse?
Jesus is saying that His very nature is so in line with the law that He has satisfied the standard of the law.
Why does Jesus need to say this? Who was Jesus working against?
Pharisees
Legalism vs Illegalism
Sorting Cards
Jesus is making it clear that He will do neither.

Jesus’ View of Scripture

18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

What is a dot or iota?
What is the therefore, therefore?
So what is Jesus saying in this passage?

Jesus Sets the Standard

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

How good were the pharisees?
Can we attain what Jesus is calling us to?

Main idea

Jesus is telling the crowd that God’s standard is perfection and He has come to fulfill that standard.

Bottom Line

Jesus fulfilled the law because we couldn’t

If we could have attained this standard there would be no need for Jesus.
Jesus loves scripture and has a high view of it
He came to show that both legalism and illegalism wont work.
The only thing that works is faith in what Jesus had faith in.

25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

The Old Testament is like a room at night. barely see.
All of scripture is about Jesus.
