GOD IS SOVEREIGN

Isaiah 46:9–10 ESV
9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
Genesis 25:19–21 ESV
19 These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. 21 And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
HERE WE GO AGAIN.
FASCINATING, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE PROMISED BLESSING AND DESCENDANTS STRUGGLE GETTING PREGNANT!
WHEN ABRAM AND SARAH COULDN'T CONCEIVE THEY INVOLVED HAGAR.
WHEN ISAAC AND REBEKAH COULDN'T CONCEIVE ISAAC INVOLVED GOD. HE PRAYED.
LETS JUST STOP HERE. HUSBANDS DO YOU PRAY FOR YOUR WIVES? WIVES FOR YOUR HUSBANDS?
Genesis 25:22–23 ESV
22 The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”
HERE WE GO AGAIN! JEALOUSY AND INFIGHTING BETWEEN AN OLDER AND YOUNGER BROTHER.
"STRUGGLED" translates the root rāṣaṣ, meaning a violent collision, a crushing or breaking. The stem (hithpoel) of the verb indicates reciprocal blows occurred between the children
DIVISION/SEPARATION.
FAVOR BEING PLACED ON THE YOUNGER.
CAIN AND ABLE
NOAHS SONS
ISHMAEL AND ISAAC
GOD CHOOSES AND DECLARES WHILE THEY ARE IN THE WOMB!!!!
Genesis 25:24–26 ESV
24 When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
NAMES ARE A PLAY ON WORDS
Genesis 25:27–28 ESV
27 When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
DON'T MISTAKE THIS TO MEAN THEY LOVED THE ONE AND DIDN'T LOVE THE OTHER.
THIS IS PREFERENCE.
Genesis 25:29–34 ESV
29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
GOD SOVEREIGNLY CHOOSES JACOB OVER ESAU.
FOR WHAT? SALVATION?
DID GOD CHOOSE JACOB FOR "HEAVEN" AND ESAU FOR "HELL"?
NO. FOR COVENANT.
FOR THE BLOODLINE OF BLESSING.
ULTIMATELY, ISAACS SEED WILL SPAWN A SAVIOR FOR ALL.
IS GOD'S CHOICE UNFAIR? WHAT'S IT BASED ON?
LETS GO TO ROMANS 9.
Romans 9:1–13 ESV
1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. 6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9 For this is what the promise said: “About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
SO GOD HATED ESAU?
CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT
THIS IS ABOUT CHOICE. QUOTE FROM MAL 1.
IT'S ABOUT THE CHOICE OF ONE NECESSITATES THE REJECTION OF OTHERS.
JESUS ACTUALLY TALKED THIS WAY! GO TO LUKE 14
Luke 14:25–26 ESV
25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
SO WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?
I THINK THERE IS MORE GOING ON HERE.
THE CHOICE OF THE YOUNGER OVER THE OLDER IS PLAYED OUT SO OFTEN IN GENESIS.
Ephesians 3:7–10 ESV
7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
WE ARE MADE AFTER/LOWER THAN THE ANGELS
YET IT IS MANKIND THAT IS CHOSEN.
1 Corinthians 1:26–31 ESV
26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
