Read: 1 Timothy 4:16

1 Timothy 4:16 KJV 1900
16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
We are looking at this word “Doctrine” the Christian faith has several core doctrines that are essential.
We talked about one this morning
D- Deity of Christ
Tonight I want to talk about one that is not as fun nor easy to discuss that of the doctrine of Original Sin.
Look with me at our starting place on this subject:
The classic passage for depravity is found in: Psalm 51:5
Look at that with me please - Psalm 51:5
Psalm 51:5 KJV 1900
5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.
Now I want us to notice a couple of things
David isn’t talking about an immoral affair of his parents - He is talking about his own moral and spiritual situation
The word “iniquity” indicates the basic idea of “crookedness” in fact the root word for iniquity means to twist or twist away. And this “iniquity” is a twisting away from God’s desired will for our lives.
The word “sin” indicates a “missing of the mark” a failure to measure of to God’s standard of righteousness.
These two words “iniquity” and “sin” sum up the spiritual condition of every descendant of Adam from the moment of conception.
The primary terms the Bible uses are:
Sin Romans 7:8
Romans 7:8 KJV 1900
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
“Sin that dwells in me” Romans 7:17
The “Law of Sin” Romans 7:23
The “flesh” Romans 7:18, 8:1
Fleshly minded or KJV “Carnally Minded” Romans 8:6
Okay so we have set down some working descriptions and definitions for this thing called “original sin” but where does it come from?
The Bible gives us an overall picture of what happened and why we now have “original sin”
It started in the Garden when Adam sinned deliberately - now Eve might have brought him the fruit - but she was deceived - Adam deliberately or willingly sinned. Whatever his motives or reasoning - He deliberately and willingly ate the fruit.
1 Timothy 2:14 KJV 1900
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
According to Paul in the book of Romans - It was because of this deliberate act of sin by Adam that sin entered the world
Romans 5:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
And look also at Romans 5:19
Romans 5:19 KJV 1900
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Adam who was holy and pure, at that bite became sinful an ruined by the fall - and from that point on depravity, or original sin has been passed on to the descendents.
From Adam onward, each descendent was conceived and born with this depravity (deprivation of the sanctifying presence of God in one’s life)
It is a total depravity meaning all our being is polluted and warped by this original sin.
It is a self-centered ness:
Listen to these verses:
Isaiah 53:6 KJV 1900
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Jeremiah 17:9 KJV 1900
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
1 Kings 8:46 KJV 1900
46 If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;
Jeremiah 30:12 KJV 1900
12 For thus saith the Lord, Thy bruise is incurable, And thy wound is grievous.
So we have discussed the problem what about the cure???
I’m glad you asked
Colossians 1:21 KJV 1900
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
Romans 5:10 KJV 1900
10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Sin is two fold in nature - you have committed sins (you lie, cheat, steal, etc) then you have the inward propensity or bent to sin the original sin.
Your committed sins must be repented of - they were deliberate acts against God I spoke about that Wednessday night
1 John 1:9 KJV 1900
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
you don’t repent of the original sin you were born with it You have to come to him for cleansing:
Now I will leave for another time and discussion how that cleansing takes place -
I’ve wondered if more than one person compiled and wrote our bylaws because there are two different approaches -
Here is what it says about entire sanctification:
Entire sanctification is that second definite, instantaneous work of grace, subsequent to regeneration John 17:9-17; Eph. 1:12, 13); wrought in the heart of the justified person through faith by the baptism with the Holy Ghost and fire, whereby the heart of the believer is cleansed from all original sin, and filled with the Holy Ghost. (Acts 15:8, 9; Rom. 15:16: Matt. 3:11; Acts 1:4-8; Acts 2; Heb. 10:10; 13:12, 13; Eph. 1:4).
Then listen to what it says about Original Sin:
Original sin is that corruption of the nature of all the offspring of Adam by reason of which everyone is destitute of original righteousness (I Cor. 15:22; Rom. 5:12, 18; 3:12); is adverse to God; is without spiritual life; and is inclined to evil and that continually (Gen. 6:5; 8:21). In the Scriptures it is designated as “the carnal mind” (Rom. 8:7), our “old man” (Rom. 6:6), “the flesh” (Rom. 8:5, 8), “sin that dwelleth in me” (Rom. 7:17), “root of bitterness” (Heb. 12:15), and similar expressions. It continues to exist after regeneration, though subdued, until eradicated and destroyed (I John 3:8) by the baptism with the Holy Ghost and fire (Acts 15: 8, 9).
I’m thankful that God has a remedy for this thing called original sin and did not leave us to our own demise.
(Perhaps if there is time open for questions or discussion)
