Genesis 22:1-12

INTRODUCTION

Abraham faces the greatest test of faith possible.

Hebrews 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," 19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

Every believer will have his or her faith tested.

Someone has said “A faith that cannot be tested is a faith that cannot be trusted.”

Key Principles...

God’s Purpose - Why does God test us?

God’s Promises - How does God provide for us during our tests?

Our Problems - How do we react when the test comes?

1A.       GOD’S PURPOSE - Why does God test our Faith?

1B.       God wants to reveal Himself to us.

John 17:3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

God wants to reveal His faithfulness to us.

God wants to reveal some new truth about His ways, plans, purposes, and methods to us.

God wants to reveal to us the true nature of our commitment.

Ø       Simon Peter - denied Christ!

2B.       God wants us to grow in our faith and devotion to Him.

Trust and Obey!

But we never can prove the delights of His love until all on the altar we lay;

For the favor He shows and the joy He bestows are for them who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2A.       GOD’S PROMISE - How does God provide for us during our testing?

1B.       He has promised to control the testing.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it..

He tailors to test to match our faith

He provides the means for us to succeed

2B.       He has promised His companionship in the testing.

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

We are never alone in our time of testing.

3A.       OUR PROBLEMS - How we react when the testing comes.

1B.       A test will always challenge what you believe about God.

We think it is unreasonable - Why is God testing me like this?

We think that it is untimely - Why now?

We think that it is unfair - The unsaved don’t seem to go through as much as I do.

We think that it is unbearable - We must remember God’s promises.

“God will never us a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply”

2B.       What we should do when testing comes...

1.         Settle in your mind that God has forever demonstrated His love for you on the cross.  That love will never change.

2.         Do not try to understand what God is like from the middle of your circumstances.

3.         Go to God and ask Him to help you see His perspective on your situation.

4.         Wait on the Holy Spirit.  He will take the Word of God and help you understand your circumstances.

5.         Adjust your life to God and what you see Him doing in your circumstances.

6.         Do everything He tells you to.

7.         Experience God working in and through you to accomplish His purposes.
