REPAIRING THE TEMPLE

2 Chronicles 29:1-3

INTRODUCTION

Scriptural Background

A great revival developed under the leadership of Hezekiah.

The nation was in trouble morally, economically, and spiritually.

God’s judgement was being meted out on every hand.

These were dark days indeed.

Surely many questioned if there was any hope at all.

God’s people had left God and had deserted his Temple (28:24-25)

Things are not much different in our day...

Many prefer the pleasures of the world to the worship of God.

Many have left God’s house for other loyalties.

Many have sought success and happiness in the ways of this world not in the Word of God.

How can we know if our Temple needs repair?

SOME THINGS THAT WILL RUIN YOUR TEMPLE

The Temple was a place of worship and sacrifice it represented the presence and power of God in the lives of His people. Without the Temple the Israelites had no hope. A ruined Temple symbolized a broken relationship with God.

Trying to Justify and Hide Your Sin (29:6)

“Unfaithful” = trespassed; to cover up

The idea is that we try to excuse our sin by pretending to be something we are not.

Refusing to Confess and Repent of Your Sin (29:6)

“They did evil in the eyes of the Lord God and forsook him...”

Replacing Worship and Service To God With The Things of the World (28:1-4)

Becoming Lackadaisical about Worship Attendance (29:6)

“They turned their faces away from the Lord’s dwelling...”

Neglecting Personal quite times and prayer time (29:6)

“...turned their backs on him...”

Becoming more concerned about what You can get out of Church, than what you can Give God. (29:7)

SOME TOOLS THAT WILL REPAIR YOUR TEMPLE

Be Honest with Yourself and God about Your Sin (29:6-9)

(Isaiah 1:18‑20)  "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. {19} If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; {20} but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Determine to Change Your Ways (29:10,11)

(Luke 15:17‑19)  "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! {18} I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. {19} I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.'

Take the Necessary Steps to Change Your Ways (29:11-19)

(Acts 26:20) ... I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

Take God at His Word, Believe that He will Forgive and Restore You (29:31)

1 John 1:9

SOME REWARDS OF A REPAIRED TEMPLE

A New Excitement About God’s Work (30:1,5)

A Sense of Unity Among God’s People (30:12)

Increased Attendance in God’s House (30:13)

Great Spiritual Victories are Won (32:20-22)

APPLICATION

What condition is your Temple in?

(1 Corinthians 6:19‑20)  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; {20} you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Are you...
