The Revelation of Jesus as the Lion, Root of David, and Lamb

Notes
Transcript
After receiving the seven letters John was taken to Heaven to receive further revelation concerning the fulfillment of God’s plan.
(Revelation 4:1, ESV) After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
The revelation that John was to receive was hidden in a scroll sealed with seven seals; it’s importance can’t be overemphasized!
The scroll not only contained revelation concerning the fulfillment of God’s plan, it was also the means to release fulfillment
However, circumstances changed, and it looked like God’s plan wouldn’t be fulfilled!
(Revelation 5:2–3, ESV) And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it,
John was overwhelmed with sorrow and disappointment, not only for himself but for all of mankind!
“weep loudly” = The loudness of John’s weeping was emphasized.
The word “weep” emphasizes the noise of the weeping; the word “loud” emphasizes it again.
To say the least John was visibly upset!
In his disappointment John ‘forgot’ that Jesus had already conquered and made it possible for God’s plan to be fulfilled!
When we are disappointed it is often because we have lost sight of the fact that Jesus has already conquered!
We need to heed Revelation 5:5, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered,”

I. The Revelation Of Who Jesus Is (His Titles)

A. The Lion Of The Tribe Of Judah

1. The title, “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” is only seen in Revelation but it is rooted in the prophecy given to Judah.

(Genesis 49:9–10, ESV) Judah is a lion’s cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him? 10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

2. The prophets also likened the LORD to a lion.

(Hosea 11:10, ESV) They shall go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion; ...
(Amos 3:7–8, ESV) ... The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy?

B. The Root Of David

1. This phrase associates Jesus with the promised Davidic king of the Old Testament.

2. Because Jesus was a descendant of King David he had the legal right and authority to rule.

C. The Lamb

1. John was told that the Lion would open the scroll yet it was Jesus as a Lamb!

The power and authority of the Lion is revealed in the ministry of the Lamb of God!

2. There are times that we are anticipating Jesus to reveal Himself as a Lion (fierce power) but instead He comes as a Lamb.

Jesus always comes in the way needed to get the job done!

D. Each Title Emphasizes A Different Aspect Of Jesus’ Life And Ministry:

1. Lion = Power

2. Root of David = Authority

3. Lamb = Sacrifice

II. The Revelation Of What Jesus Has Done (His Actions)

A. Jesus Conquered!

1. “Conquer” = nikao (νικάω, 3528) means “to overcome” and is usually translated “to conquer”

2. What did Jesus conquer? Everything that stood in Jesus’ way from redeeming mankind, Jesus conquered it!

Sin: (Hebrews 4:15, NIV) ... tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
The works of the devil: (1 John 3:8, NIV) ... The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
Power and authorities: (Colossians 2:15, NIV) And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
The world system: (John 16:33) “... In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

B. Conquering requires:

1. Authority (Root of David)

Authority speaks of the right to do something.
(Mat. 28:18, ESV) And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

2. Power (Lion of the tribe of Judah)

Power speaks of the ability to do something.
Jesus has authority and power; He has the right to rule and the power to do it!

3. Sacrifice (Lamb)

After revealing that Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah conquered, He is revealed in Revelation 5:6 as the Lamb.
(Revelation 5:6, ESV) ... I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, ...
This reveals that conquering takes not only power but sacrifice.

III. The Revelation That Jesus Is Worthy

A. One Of The Key Words In Revelation 5 Is “Worthy”

1. (Revelation 5:2, ESV) ... “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”

2. (Revelation 5:4, ESV) ... I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.

3. The Greek word axios (ἄξιος, 514) has the meaning of “weight, value, worth” (Vine)

B. Jesus Was Proclaimed To Be Worthy Because Of What He Has Done

1. (Revelation 5:9, ESV) And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,

2. The titles given to Jesus didn’t make Him worthy to open the scroll, it was what He did that made Him worthy.

Jesus was worthy because He conquered and fulfilled that for which He was sent; to redeem mankind!
(Revelation 5:9–10, ESV) And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

C. It’s Time For The Church To “Behold” Who Jesus Is And What He Has Done And Give Him The Praise!

1. Many are weeping as though God’s promises and plan won’t be fulfilled!

(Revelation 5:5, ESV) ... “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, ...

2. Fix your eyes on Jesus and give Him the honor, glory, and praise! (Revelation 5:11-13)

IV. Our Role In God’s Kingdom

A. Redeemed: Jesus Redeemed Us So That We Could Be Part Of The Kingdom Of God

(Rev. 5:9, NIV) ... with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

B. Priests: Jesus Has Made It Possible For Us To Function As Priests In His Kingdom

(Revelation 5:10, ESV) and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

C. Conquerors: Jesus Is Given Us The Authority And Power We Need To Be More Than Conquerors

(Luke 10:19, NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

D. Sacrifice: To Function Successfully In God’s Kingdom Takes More Than Authority And Power ... It Takes Sacrifice!

1. We see all this in Jesus!

2. (Luke 9:23–24, ESV) And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
