Jesus' Prayer for His Disciples - Pt 1 John 17:6-12 Outline for Jesus' High Priestly Prayer 1. Jesus prayed for Himself (1-5) 2. Jesus prayed for His disciples (6-19) 3. Jesus prayed for Us (20-26) 1. The Foundation of Jesus' Prayer (6-10) - The disciples are the chosen gift of the Father to the Son (6a,9-10) Ephesians 1:4 - 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him... Colossians 3:12 - 12 So, as those who have been chosen of God... - The disciples freely chose to obey the Gospel (6b, 7-8) 1 Thessalonians 4:9-10 - 9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more, 2. The Requests of Jesus' Prayer (11-19) -Jesus prayed for their spiritual protection (11-16) We must submit to both absolute sovereignty of God and our responsibility to obey Him. Philippians 2:12-13 - 12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. God is both supremely holy and our caring Father. Isaiah 66:2b - 2b ... But to this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word. James 4:6b - 6b ... God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble." God chose to value us not because we are worthy but because He is merciful. Romans 9:15-16 - 15 For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion" 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. Jesus prayed to His Father for His disciples in order to ensure their protection and their mission to the world.
