1pet 7:4-
castaway example (isolation is bad no matter how beautiful the setting)
voluntary castaways through our phones, televisions, and so on. We are choosing to be alone.
Isolation is an unintended consequence of individualism.
sheila-ism
individualism breeds isolation. when the world is centered on yourself alone is a bad things.
people are being tempted to turn their back on the church: young people, divorced people, same-sex attraction, elderly people. People are being tempted to leave the church. Isolation is torture and treacherous.
How do we stay in a church when we are tempted to distance ourselves? or a step further would be why should I come back to the church when I’ve already left?
Now part of this is that some of the people who need to hear this…aren’t here. But I’m trusting that God will his way get his message out to his people.
Context and setting for 1 Peter...
1 Peter 4:7–11 HCSB
7 Now the end of all things is near; therefore, be serious and disciplined for prayer. 8 Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, it should be as one who speaks God’s words; if anyone serves, it should be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
This is coming to support what Peter said in 1 Peter 2:4.
1 Peter 2:4–5 HCSB
4 Coming to Him, a living stone—rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God— 5 you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
If you are tempted to distance yourself from the church, remember that you are an essential part of the living house Jesus is building.
1 Peter 2:4 HCSB
4 Coming to Him, a living stone—rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God—
As you come to him, living stone (verse 1 Pet 2:4), we become living stones (verse 1 Pet 2:5). That’s part of our transformation. However we are not living stones in isolation. We are living stones being built into the spiritual house. You are an essential part of the living house that Jesus is building.
19 min mark - Living stone example
We are living because of Christ work and him in us, but we are not alive in isolation. We are part of this living house that he is building.
What kind of house? A house of a holy priesthood. Priests were people who had access to God and brought the people to God. In the Old Testament only a certain people from the tribe of Levi could be priests. You would have to be a Jewish Levite man to be a priest. In the New Covenant anyone who receives Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit immediately becomes a priest in this living house.
Offering spiritual sacrifices.
