FDR knew what it meant to unite in prayer and the importance of it. During his evening radio address to the American people on D-Day (Normandy invasion) he delivered a statement that took the form of a prayer and requested all to join in praying for those that were stepping into battle and those that were stateside. He prayed...- “help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice...I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips.”
While this was during a different time, a different circumstance, and for a different purpose, we should, as believers, be devoting ourselves in a continuance of prayer, right?
In light of today’s inauguration I thought it was fitting to take a quick look at a couple verses as a reminder of our responsibility as Christians, as men of the church, leaders of our households, and examples we set for our kids, grandkids, and those that are looking to us as role models.
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
We have seen the division that has been publicized and the social media litter box that has overflowed abundantly.
People who are part of our government — whether they’re members of Congress, the president, the Cabinet, the judiciary, or state leaders — are faced with difficult decisions every day in addition to balancing their personal lives with family and friends. Too often, it’s easy to forget about the person behind the political decisions they make. But if we take a moment to remember their humanity, it allows us to see them as a child of God who needs prayer just like you and me.

It is often easier to pray for a leader with whom we naturally agree or who we think is leading well. It is more challenging to pray for a leader with whom we struggle. But we are called to pray for our leaders regardless of our personal feelings toward them. You can ask God to help you respect and honor your leaders well even in the midst of your disagreements with them.
Praying for our leaders brings glory to God. It helps us understand and be grateful for their sacrifices and the responsibility they bear. Prayer also acknowledges that God is the ultimate authority. When we pray for our leaders, we are asking God to equip the men and women He has placed in authority over us to carry out His purposes.

As Christians, we are to live in a fine balance; standing for that which is true while seeking unity amongst ourselves whenever possible, standing firm in the faith while showing grace to those who do not, holding our leaders accountable while praying for their wisdom and well-being.
30 And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.
We are to be those who stand in the gap, who lift up our nation with all its favors and faults before the throne of God, and pray that He continues to work in our midst.
May we be faithful, informed and thoughtful when praying and talking to others about our politics, and as we ask for God's wisdom and righteousness to be evident in our nation's policies and leaders.

Prayer for ourselves
17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Prayer for our leaders
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
14 Where there is no guidance, a people falls,
but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
1 The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord;
he turns it wherever he will.
