The revelation of Jesus Christ in the Book of Revelation (Part 1)

Notes
Transcript
As a basis for studying the revelation of Jesus Christ as given in the Book of Revelation I want to give this 3-fold foundation:
The Book of Revelation serves a two-fold purpose: it is a revelation of Jesus Christ and a revelation from Jesus Christ.
The Book of Revelation has been given to reveal Jesus beyond that which we see in the Gospels.
The Book of Revelation has been given so that the slaves of Jesus will be prepared for His 2nd coming.
Jesus only gives the revelation to His slaves; i.e. only a “doulos” of Jesus is able to receive it and be blessed by it.
Most translations use the word "servant" but that minimizes the type of relationship we are called to have with Jesus.
We are slaves bought by His blood, not servants (hired hands); Jesus reveals Himself and His plan to His slaves!
The blessing attached to the Book of Revelation requires our involvement: read it aloud, hear it, and obey it.
Reading the revelation aloud prepares the obedient and forewarns the earth & heavens.
Obedience to that which is revealed in the revelation is the goal: reading it and hearing are how to get there!

Titles Of Jesus (Rev 1:5, ESV) ... Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.

Jesus Christ: The Faithful Witness

“faithful witness”

faithful (pistos) trustworthy, dependable, reliable
witness (martus) a person who bears witness even unto death

Jesus is God’s example of what every disciple is called to be: a faithful witness!

This is exactly what the Church needed to hear then; this is exactly what we need to know now!
Jesus only speaks that which He receives from the Father! (Total unity and submission!)
(Revelation 1:1, ESV) The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants ...

Jesus Christ: The Firstborn Of The Dead

In reference to Jesus “firstborn” doesn’t mean that He was a created being.

(Jn 1:1–3, NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
(Col 1:15–16, ESV) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

Calling Jesus the “firstborn of the dead” refers to the resurrection of Jesus and how He has paved the way for us!

In all things Jesus has gone before us, conquered every foe, and paved the way for His Church!

Because of Jesus we can declare: “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (1 Cor 15:55)

Jesus Christ: The Ruler Of Kings On Earth

“ruler (chief) of kings on earth”

This title reveals that Jesus calls others to rule with Him on the earth; He is the chief ruler while others fulfill their role as Adam was originally called to do.

This was prophesied in the OT concerning Jesus.

(Psalm 89:26–27, ESV) He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ 27 And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

There are times that Jesus allows the ruler on earth to rebel against God and His plan; but Jesus is still in charge!

(Ps 2:1–6) Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

This Gives Us A Clear Message That We Need To Hear In These Days That We Are Living In!

Jesus is faithful!

No matter what you see, feel, or experience. Listen to Jesus and believe what He says!

Jesus is first!

All temptations are based on this one thing: “Me first!” Crucify your flesh and make Jesus first in your life!

Jesus rules!

There are times that Jesus allows the enemy to prevail; but never loose faith that Jesus is in charge!

The Work Of Jesus (Rev 1:5-6, ESV) ... To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, ...

Jesus Christ Loves Us!

It is interesting that at the very beginning of sharing this revelation Jesus makes it clear that He loves His Church!

Loves = ἀγαπάω (Present Tense)

The love of Jesus for His people is the foundation for all that He shares throughout the Book of Revelation:

It is because Jesus loves His people that He is willing to rebuke and discipline (instead of spitting us out!)
It is because Jesus loves His people that He forewarns us of the chaos ahead.

God’s love won’t shield us from suffering; but it will comfort us when we are called upon to suffer for His Name!

Jesus Christ Has Freed Us!

Jesus has set us free from our sins by His blood!

Freed = λύω, “to loosen,” especially by way of deliverance; can refer to “breaking destructively,”
“Break Every Chain” (Jesus Culture: Kristene Dimarco)
Jesus doesn’t call us to follow Him still chained to our sins; He wants to set you free!
It is because of our freedom that we can be overcomers!

Jesus Christ Has Re-Created Us!

We have been made a kingdom of priests to God the Father; following the work of Jesus!

This is what the love of Jesus has brought about; this is what the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross has made possible!
It is time for the Church to start fulfilling their God-given calling as priests unto God!
However, instead of offering animal sacrifices as did the OT priests, we offer ourselves!
(Romans 12:1, ESV) I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

You have been re-created to fulfill a Kingdom purpose.

Our 1st Kingdom purpose is PRAYER!

(1 Thessalonians 5:17, ESV) pray without ceasing,

Our 2nd Kingdom purpose is MAKING DISCIPLES!

(Matthew 28:19, ESV) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, ...

Our 3rd Kingdom purpose is more individual; fulfilling that which the Holy Spirit has gifted and called you to do.

(1 Corinthians 12:4–6, NIV) There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Jesus As You May Not Know Him! (Rev 1:7, ESV) ... he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him.

Jesus Christ Is Coming Again!

It will be a miraculous coming as was His first in the incarnation; but in an entirely different way.
Jesus won’t come as a lamb to be slain; He is coming fully glorified, a roaring lion, a conquering King with a rod of iron.
(Revelation 19:15, ESV) From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.

Jesus Christ Will Be Seen By Everyone!

Jesus will no longer be hidden; He will reveal Himself to all mankind; both friend and foe!

People Will Wail At His Coming!

It will be a time of rejoicing by those who have loved and served Jesus faithfully.
But, it will be a time of wailing by those who have disobeyed or fully rejected Jesus! (Even some “believers” will wail!)
