Exhortations to the Church – A Study in Ephesians Practical Applications – Part 1 (Ephesians 4:25-32) Put Off – Put On Principle: Ephesians 4:20-24 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. 1. Put off – Evaluate areas of your life which you struggle with sin. “Stop.” “Is this right?” “It this biblical?” 2. Renew your mind – Understand what the Bible says about it. Believe what the Bible says about it. 3. Put on – Do what the Bible says instead of what you would do. Several Practical Applications: Ephesians 1:13-14 “A powerful motivation for putting off unwholesome talk is that not to do so will grieve the Holy Spirit of God. All sin is painful to God, but sin in His children breaks His heart. When His children refuse to change the ways of the old life for the ways of the new, God grieves. The Holy Spirit of God weeps, as it were, when He sees Christians lying instead of speaking the truth, becoming unrighteously rather than righteously angry, stealing instead of sharing, and speaking corrupt instead of uplifting and gracious words.” - John MacArthur C. Application – We need to take care as to how we live, that we are seeking to please God rather than doing the things that cause Him pain, because the Holy Spirit indwells and seals us. VI. Stop A. Actions (vs.31) Romans 3:10-14; Hebrews 12:14-15 B. I. Speak the Truth (vs.25) We are not to lie to each other, because we are joined together. Therefore what benefits the body is to speak truthfully with one another. While God does allow righteous anger, we need to be careful that we are not sinfully angry. We need to deal with sinful anger immediately, repenting and making things right with others. III. Work for What You Need (vs. 28) We are not to steal but to work hard to provide for our needs as well as to help others who have needs. IV. Speak Words that Build Up (vs.29) Our speech ought to be used to build up one another and not to tear down or even be useless. We need to speak things which cause the body to grow. the Holy Spirit (vs. 30) to the Spirit Romans 14:15; 1 Thessalonians 4:13; 1 Peter 1:6 B. Why? 1. Because He Colossians 3:8 C.
