1 Timothy 6:6 KJV 1900
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

In this verse the conjunction “with” tells us that “great gain” cannot come without “godliness and contentment” operating in our lives.

What is godliness?

Godliness is being like and having the mind of God. What is God like and what is the mind of God like?

John 14:8–9 KJV 1900
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

Godliness is having the Attitude of Jesus.

Philippians 2:4–8 NKJV
4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Jesus’ Attitude was to serve others.

Matthew 20:28 KJV 1900
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

What is “contentment?

Contentment is satisfaction and sufficiency. A state of happiness. What every state you find yourself in you can learn how to be satisfied.

Romans 12:2 KJV 1900
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

This Scripture tells us that there are two mindsets and we have either one or the other; worldly or godly.

The one with a worldly mindset cannot have a relationship with God.

Romans 8:5–8 ESV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

The one with a godly mindset can ask God for anything.

John 15:7 ESV
7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Philippians 4:10-20 tells us that God is a God that will bless you when you bless His work and be content with whatever state you find yourself in. If we want to help God’s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven by supporting with our money there is no good thing that God will withhold from you.

Psalm 84:10–11 KJV 1900
10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, Than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: The Lord will give grace and glory: No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

It is better to be with God and His program then the world’s system and how they get their riches.

Psalm 15:1–5 KJV 1900
1 Lord, Who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, And speaketh the truth in his heart. 3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, Nor doeth evil to his neighbour, Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. 4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; But he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. 5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, Nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Giving and receiving are the most important thing you can do in God’s system. Phil. 4:14-20 explain to us what giving and receiving really accomplices for us in God. If we do like God tells us to do we will receive His promises.

One of the most important things we can do is consider how we live before God and live better.

Hebrews 12:1 KJV 1900
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

A weight is a burden or hindrance. Sin is all unrighteousness. We find in 2 Cor. 6:11-7:1 what burdens and hindrances are. 1 John 5 tells us that all unrighteousness and all that do unrighteousness is sin and sinners. Rom. 1:18

Romans 12:1 KJV 1900
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Our Attitude about money and how we get it must become new and it is going to take God working in us. Paul expresses this to the Philippians.

Philippians 3:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Jesus tells us that what our attitude about money should be.

Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

We must have a New Attitude about Our Money.
