Writing is a big deal to God. He wants to guide and instruct as many that will listen away from destruction. He is long-suffering, willing that none would perish; sadly we don’t all listen.. (2 Peter 3:9) It's important to record the words of Jesus, so that you can be a faithful witness of His gospel to the world.

As a recap of everything we’ve discussed so far, let’s review the 4 keys of hearing God’s voice together.
Stillness, Vision, Spontaneity, & Writing
Stillness. We must quiet ourselves, quiet our hearts. - remember the story of Elijah? How God retuned him so he could hear.
Vision. We must look to Jesus. When we see Jesus and remain focused on Him, we can do anything. Remember Peter walking on water too!
Spontaneity. Learning to tune to the flow of the Holy Spirit. He lives in us and He’s here to guide us!
Writing. As we meet with Jesus, we record everything He tells us so that we can focus our prayers, speak comfort and life over ourselves and others and walk in greater intimacy with Him.
Writing is a big deal to God. He wants to guide and instruct as many that will listen away from destruction. He is long-suffering, willing that none would perish; sadly we don’t all listen.. (2 Peter 3:9)
Would you get your bibles out and stand with me? I want to proclaim something together, this might even become a regular practice.
My eyes are on Jesus
My heart is tuned to His Spirit
My ears are listening to His voice
My mind will believe what He says
My voice will declare the truth of His word
Now, let’s read the Word…
Proverbs 3:1–4 NKJV
1 My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; 2 For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you. 3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, 4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.
John 5:37–40 NASB95
37 “And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 “You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
John 5:45–47 NASB95
45 “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. 47 “But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
Habakkuk 2:1–2 NKJV
1 I will stand my watch And set myself on the rampart, And watch to see what He will say to me, And what I will answer when I am corrected. 2 Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.

Sermon in a sentence:

Record the words of Jesus, so that you can be a faithful witness of His gospel to the world.

Have you ever played the game telephone?
If not, we’re going to demonstrate that today.
A pink pig and a pesky donkey flew a kite at night.
Rabbits rumble, giants grumble, dogs bark in the dark, and wolves woo in the blue.
The point is, we’re not great at remembering things in their exact detail due to our experiences. They create a filter and it’s that filter that can affect how we hear something. A great way to test this in everyday life, when you communicate something, ask the other person - how did you hear that or what did you hear me say?
Today, we’re going to discuss a way that we can grow in this area. There is no one more important to understand than Jesus. I don’t think any of us want to miss hearing Him, so we’re going to talk about journaling.
I know it may seem insignificant, but journaling has provided a way for many to receive the edification, exhortation and comfort of the Holy Spirit.

To remember

Psalm 119:11 NLT
11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
John 14:26 NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
As I was preparing this message, these scriptures stuck out to me. Many that know me, know that I write down thoughts, discussions ideas. When I study, I write scripture, prayer or other prompts that come to me.
For me this assists with photographic memory. Scientific studies haven’t confirmed this to be a thing and it’s often confused with eidetic memory. Studies show that everyone can do this to a degree, but only for a few seconds. I believe this is something the Holy Spirit uses (hence the inability for the world to replicate) to bring things to our remembrance. I experience this VERY often.
> As we tune into the flow of the Holy Spirit our senses are also focused.
We see, hear, smell, taste, touch…. (Revelation 1:9-12) John was there…
Another example that came to mind was a mnemonic device. It’s any learning technique that aids information retention or retrieval (remembering) in the human memory.
For example, when I was learning the strings on my guitar, I was taught the phrase “Everybody gets donuts at elections”. This corresponded to the strings, from bottom to top - E, G, D, A, E. Or when I was learning Biblical Hebrew, we started with the Hebrew alphabet. We recited it to the theme of Yankee Doodle - I can still recite it today.

To remember the behavior of royalty!

Did you know that you were called to be kings and priests? I have scriptures for that - (1 Peter 2:9, Revelation 1:6) - also, one of Jesus’ titles is “King of kings”.
Deuteronomy 17:18–20 NKJV
18 “Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes, 20 that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.
1 Samuel 10:25 NKJV
25 Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Encouragement & Hope

1 Thessalonians 5:11 NLT
11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
Proverbs 16:24 NLT
24 Kind words are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
Psalm 119:18 NLT
18 Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.
> Jesus, help us to remember your goodness and faithfulness to us. Help us encourage one another as Your Spirit leads us.

For clarity and focused prayer

To build our trust
count our blessings
Exhortation
When Pastor Gary was here, he mentioned getting ready to pray and lists of things to-do would pop up and distract him. So, he wrote them down so he could be free to focus in prayer.
In Daniel chapter 8, Daniel receives a vision regarding future events. He is then given understanding of the events after the Lord instructs the angel Gabriel to assist him. He also confirms the word according to the words of the prophet Jeremiah (9:2). His immediate response wasn’t to go tell someone, it was prayer. Obviously, he told others through the writing down of the vision, but prayer came first.
As we seek the Lord concerning the revelation we receive through prayer and study, He will confirm it and thus build our faith/trust in hearing Him.
It’s critical that we write down everything He says, since we’ve discussed how important it is to remember exactly HOW He said it.
I am reminded of the song - Count Your Blessings -
Count your blessings, name them one by one
Count your blessings, see what God hath done
Count your blessings, name them one by one
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Psalm 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.
Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Psalm 105:1 Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!
Psalm 116:12 What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Exhortation - to exhort someone or to urge by a strong, often stirring argument, admonition, advice, or appeal. In our exhortations we might use speech or discourse that encourages, incites, or earnestly advises someone to do something.
> Jesus, bring us clarity in prayer. Show us how to pray effectively, so that our faith in Your goodness stirs us to action. We don’t want to be busy, we want to be led.

To speak life into and build up others

Comfort
Edification - the process of spiritual growth in a Christian who is living according to the plan of God and who is fulfilling the command to "grow in grace and in the knowledge" of Jesus Christ.
Testimony - to bear witness, to give evidence
John 15:7 NLT
7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!
Hebrews 10:24–25 NKJV
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
When I think about comfort, it ties a bit to remembrance. I think of the early days of camcorders. We would go around and film everything. Even the days of tape recorders, you could hear sermons from all over and remind yourself of truths you missed.
It always brought me great comfort to see where God led us through. I also enjoyed it because I could see the faith of my grandfather and it energized me to continue pressing closer to Jesus. Do you have a story or mentor or a time that the Lord brought something to your remembrance, in order to build you up?
1 Corinthians 4:16 NKJV
16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.
1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV
1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
3 John 11 NKJV
11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.
Paul’s urging to “follow Him as He follows Christ” wasn’t to distract or put him on a pedestal or idolize him. It was to inspire us to press in more. If God could save and transform him, all is not lost for us! Take heart!
Revelation 12:11 NLT
11 And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.
Our testimony is powerful. The word here says that it’s how we will overcome. It’s a way for people to see who you were and who you are being transformed to be. Like Christ. Don’t live in the past, continue to press forward towards the future.
- Road to Emmaus - our hearts burned within us
Two men walked towards Emmaus, discussing the events that had happened. Jesus appeared, not revealing Himself to them, and asked what they were discussing. They then explained what many of us can feel sometimes. Our head knowledge doesn’t always correlate to our heart knowledge. Jesus revealed Himself and explained everything to them. Thank you, Lord! (Spirit and Truth)
Luke 24:32 NLT
32 They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
> Jesus, would you focus our testimony so that it brings You glory. Remind us to live each day in Spirit and Truth. As we are the light to the world, let them see You in us!

Closing

These are “the days”

As I mentioned, don’t get caught up in the past, wishing for the good ole days. These are the days. Right now!
Jeremiah 31:31–34 NKJV
31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Joel 2:28–29 NKJV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
> Are you ready for Him to fill you and write His truth upon your hearts? Are you ready for His Spirit to live within you and guide you?
I encourage you to practice the 4 keys we’ve learned. So, let’s take a few minutes to ask Jesus what He wants to say to us. I have some paper and pens up front if you need it. Write down what He says.
If you are willing, I also encourage you to share it.
