Galatians 3:10–14 ESV
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Sermon

Reliance on works, under a curse

Galatians 3:10 ESV
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”
Why did Paul talk about Abraham, when the Law was not yet given?
Rabbis often tried to imply Abraham obeyed the law
Gentile Sinner (neither knowledge of interest in the law) - already under God’s Curse
Is it possible to obey the law?
if yes, find an example and prove that we are free to choose good or evil
Either Paul’s reasoning is flawed or it is impossible for us to fulfil the law
Paul highlights the Jewish Scholar under the curse
Those who hunt for acceptance and obey the law are under the Curse of God
Paul contrastsmen of faith” with “all who rely on works of the law
Paul fuses two quotes from Deurteronomy together
Rabbis found now way out but to cling to the physical decent from Abraham
The physical mark of circumcision
They created a superstition not held in scripture
akin to church membership or baptism, or other rite
Faith move mountains - don’t require them to move the mountain to prove they have faith

The Righteous Shall live by Faith

Galatians 3:11 ESV
11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Scripture would not point to the Messiah if there was another way God saves his people
Zechariah prophesied at birth of John
Live by Faith
Not supported for a brief period & liable to be overwhelmed by an approaching storm
Flood in Wales - Home on Golf Course
Faith - Trust in the reliable, from which there is feeling of assurance
Quotation of Habakkuk illustrates:
Habakkuk 2:4 ESV
4 “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.
Hebrews also aclaims “righteous shall live by faith”
Hebrews 10:38 ESV
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.”

Law is not of Faith

Galatians 3:12 ESV
12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.”
Paul affirms that the practical implamentation of the law is not an act of Faith
The doer anticipates obtaining God’s favour
Paul summarizing Leviticus 18:5
Leviticus 18:5 ESV
5 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.
Paul defines “live by faith” in Romans 10:9
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Such belief should result in obedience
But does not itself provide salvation

Redeemed

Galatians 3:13 ESV
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
Christ redeemed us
Sacrifical Lamb - abhorant to society
Cursed is everyone who hanged on a tree Deuteronomy 21:23
Those being hung on a tree had broken the Law
outward appearance of being Cursed by God
Jews used Jesus death as being that he could not be the Messiah
Jesus was perfect and sinless
John 8:29 ESV
29 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
Jesus took our sins upon him
Isaiah 53:5 ESV
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

The gift promised to Abraham

Galatians 3:14 ESV
14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
Paul confirms - promised gift to Abraham was the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit - The distinguishing mark of the Christian
The basis of the letter

Conclusion

Faith - Trust in the reliable, from which there is feeling of assurance
The absence of the assurance of Faith, demands the assurance of the physical
Gifts of the Spirit - a modern form of circumcision
The desire to prove the presence of the supernatural to provide the assurance
