Breaking Ungodly Soul Ties

Deuteronomy 7:1–6 NKJV
“When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son. For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the Lord will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly. But thus you shall deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images, and burn their carved images with fire. “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.

What is a “soul-tie”?

A soul-tie is an emotional or spiritual “connection” with another person whether good or bad.
A soul-tie is a “soul-covenant” (official or unofficial) and/or a “soul-connection” with another person.
Today some refer to this type of relationship as “soul mates.” God is a covenant making and keeping God. He is serious about covenants, and jealously considers any “soul-covenants” we make with other people, even when they are made with our enemies and/or the ungodly.
2 Corinthians 6:14–7:1 NKJV
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

What is a godly “soul-tie?”

A godly soul-tie is an emotional or spiritual connection between two healthy and godly people which strengthens the individuals involved to live healthy and godly lives.
A godly soul-tie between a healthy parent and child or between a husband and wife in a marriage relationship is not only okay, but is a blessing from God.
A godly soul-tie seems to have developed between David and Jonathan.
1 Samuel 18:1 NKJV
Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

What is an “ungodly soul-tie”?

An ungodly soul-tie is an emotional or spiritual “soul-covenant” or “soul-connection” with another which is ungodly (i.e., unholy, perverted, dysfunctional, and/or sexual).
An ungodly soul-tie can hinder a person or persons from developing as healthy and godly individuals.
An ungodly soul-tie is a stronghold that allows us to remain in bondage to the negative effects of that relationship in our lives.
An ungodly soul-tie is a stronghold through which Satan influences our lives.
God forbade Israel from making covenants with the ungodly because they would turn their hearts away from serving the Lord and cause the anger of the Lord to be aroused against them unto destruction. (Deuteronomy 7:1-6) The people of God are a holy, chosen, and special treasure unto the Lord and are not to be corrupted by soul-ties with ungodly people.

Where do ungodly soul-ties originate?

Ungodly friends (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:15-16)
Sexual fantasy (Matthew 5:27-28)
Emotional “crush”
“Fan clubs”
Preoccupation with ungodly music
Dysfunctional relationships
Co-dependent relationships
Ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends
Ex-spouse
Not “leaving father and mother” when entering a marriage relationship (Genesis 2:23-24)
Not “releasing” son or daughter into their marriage relationship

Breaking ungodly soul-ties

Repent of entering the ungodly soul-tie relationship.
Forgive and release the person with whom a soul-tie relationship was formed.
Pray (Example prayer)
“Father, in the name of Jesus, I confess all of my emotional and sexual sins, as well as my ungodly soul ties to ___________________. I repent and turn
away from my sin now and forever. I choose to forgive ____________________ for their role in this matter. I ask You, Lord Jesus, to forgive me for my sin that resulted in these ungodly ties. I submit myself completely to You, in Jesus’ name.
Lord, I receive Your forgiveness. Thank You for forgiving me, and for cleansing me.
I choose to forgive myself, to no longer be angry with myself, hate myself, or punish myself.
Lord, I break my ungodly soul-ties with __________________. I release myself from them, and I release them from me. As I do this, Lord, I pray that You would cause them to be all that You want them to be, and that You would cause me to be all that You want me to be.
Lord, I ask You to cleanse my mind from all memories of ungodly unions, so I am totally free to give myself to You and to my mate.
I renounce and cancel the assignments of all evil spirits attempting to maintain these ungodly soul ties.
Lord, thank You for restoring my soul to wholeness. Let me walk in holiness by Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
