I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.

Pre-Sermon Ice-Breaker

An elderly man thinking his wife was losing her hearing went about 20 feet behind her and asked, “Can you hear me, Sweetheart?” No reply. Moved to 10 feet and inquired again. No reply. 5 feet and not a word. A few inches behind her ear he asked, “Can you hear me now honey”” His wife said, “For the fourth time, Yes.”

Introduction

Today is National Sanctity of Human Life Day. President Ronald Reagan declared the first National Sanctity of Human life day back in 1984. Since then, most presidents have celebrated this day each year on the Sunday closest to January 22nd. The 22nd is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the United States. Sanctity of Human Life Day actually affirms human life in many areas, not just in relation to the unborn, but in regard to the elderly, the weak and infirm, the mentally challenged and those with physical limitations. All human life is sacred, and all human life should be equally valued.
In Psalm 139:13-17 David praise God as he reflects on God’s special role in David’s own creation even in his mother’s womb. But these words do not apply to David alone. They apply to all human beings, at all times and in all places. We should protect all human life in the womb, because every unborn child is a special creation of God. And so as we examine David’s song of praise this morning. we will look at three specific reason why we should praise God and affirm the sanctity of human life in the womb and seek to protect children who are yet unborn. David says, “I will praise thee...

…For the Creation of Man

Psalm 139:14 KJV 1900
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.
I am fearfully...made.
The word fearful here doesn’t mean scary, it is a word that means, “to cause astonishment and awe, to inspire reverence or godly fear.
Genesis 1:27 KJV 1900
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
I am…wonderfully made.
Psalm 139:15 KJV 1900
My substance was not hid from thee, When I was made in secret, And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Spurgeon wrote, “A great artist will often labor alone in his studio, and not suffer his work to be seen until it is finished, even so did the Lord fashion us when no eye beheld us, and the veil was not lifted til every member was complete.”

…For of the Nature of Man

Psalm 139:14 KJV 1900
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalm 139:16 KJV 1900
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; And in thy book all my members were written, Which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
The word substance (Hebrew golem) is not the same as the word substance in verse 15. This is the only usage of the word in the Bible. The word means anything that is rolled together as a ball, a wrapped and unformed mass. Most scholars understand it to speak of the fetus in the womb.
Jeremiah 1:5 KJV 1900
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
Mankind is a trinity, like God is a trinity. God = Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mankind = Body, Soul and Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV 1900
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

…For the Salvation of Man

Psalm 139:14 KJV 1900
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Marvellous are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalm 139:17 KJV 1900
How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!
John 3:16 KJV 1900
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Conclusion

In 2003, on the 30th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President George W. Bush made a proclamation in which he called on Americans to, “reaffirm the value of human life and renew our dedication to ensuring that every American has access to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Our message today has allowed us to see that Scripture accomplishes this goal. We have learned that we should all praise God...
For the Creation of Life
For the Nature of Life
For the Salvation of Life
Have you made Jesus the Lord of Your life. Have you not only been born, but born again. It is as simple as A,B,C. If not today I invite you to call upon God and trust in him alone for your salvation.
Each of us our fearfully and Wonderfully made. We are marvellous works of God. I challenge you to memorize this verse of Scripture and add it to your tool bag. May it encourage you that God loves you and has known you since before you were born and has a purpose and vision for your life. May you share with others this great truth.
If we want to see our culture, a culture of death, change. It happens not at a ballot box, but in the human heart. With this verse hidden in your heart, you may impact those around you to value life, beginning with their own.
Let us pray.
