Opening Text: I John 4:16-19

Loving Ourselves Correctly

Genesis 1:26-27

Proposition: Loving God leads to our loving ourselves as God Loves Us.

Kathleen Devny with Raina Kelley “Girls Gone Bad” Newsweek 2/12/07, p. 42-47

Articles asks if “pop-tarts” like Lindasy Lohan, Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton along with online sleaze are leading to a generation of tweens and teens who are “prosti-tots.”

Society, peer grops, authority figures, family, self

Lifestyle, behavior, actions, attitudes, thought

Conclusion - “Where do our children learn values?  Here’s a radical idea - at home, where they always have.  Experts says attentive parents, strong teachers and nice frends are an excellent counterbalance to our increasingly sleazy culture.”

Limitations

Mitch Albom, Five People You Meet in Heaven

ALL PARENTS DAMAGE their children.  It cannot be helped.  Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of it handlers.  Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completly into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.

These factors effect our understanding of self.  The lifestyle we have may need to be corrected by our thoughts, our stained glass may need to be used by a master artist to make a beautiful design, or feelings of value may need to be restored.

So I scratched away for the third time and got off a third skin, just like the two others, and stepped out of it.  But as soon as I looked in the water I knew it had been no good.

Then the lion said ‑ but I don't know if it spoke ‑ You will have to let me undress you.  I was afraid of his claws, I can tell you, but I was pretty nearly desperate now.  So I just lay flat down on my back to let him do it.

The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart.  And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse then anything I ever felt.  The only thing that made me able to bear it was the pleasure of feeling the stuff peeel off.  You know ‑ if you've ever picked the scab of a sore place.  It hurts like billy‑oh but it is such fun to see it coming away.
