Patriarchal History 12-50 - We closed last time the Primeval History Genesis 1-11 Now we begin to turn a corner in History and begin to study Patriarchal History, and it begins with a name being drawn out of the list of names at the end of Chapter 11. This person has affected the world ever since, even you and me.
Terah had a son named "Abram." and we begin to follow his life, without explanation as to why. He remains "Abram" until chapter 17 where God changes his name to Abraham.
This is one of the best known stories in world literature.
According to Gen. 11:32 that Terah lived 205 years. He is said to have become the father of his three sons after he had lived 70 years (11:26)
Abram was 70 when he leaves Haran 12:4 - leaving us with really no information about the first 70 years of Abram's life.
While details are left out, the story goes out of it's way to portray a tremendous relationship between Abram and God.
Abram is the answer or at least the beginning of the answer to the sin problem defined in Gen. 1-11
Abraham 12-25The Call of Abram 12:1-9We are given two things about Abram In 11:30 We are told that Sarai whom Abram married was barrenIt is hinted that Abram is a destiny laden child. (12:2)Two Times God command Abram to "Go" Yahweh's first and last words to Abram (12:1; 22:1) begin with an imperative ("Go.… Take …"). Both times the imperative is followed by a triple object: "Go forth from (1) your country, (2) your homeland, (3) your father's house"; "Take (1) your son, (2) your only son whom you love, (3) Isaac." The objects in 12:1 are arranged in a sequence of less intimate to more intimate. Each succeeding phrase narrows the base as far as Abram is concerned. In both chs. 12 and 22 God's directive to Abram falls short of supplying explicit directions; Abram is simply pointed in the right direction. About the terminal point of that pilgrimage he is unclear. Here he is told to go to a land "which I will show you." In ch. 22 he is told to take Isaac to a mountain "of which I shall tell you."Victor P.
