Ephesians 2:19-22
19 So, then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you are also being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.

The Church is to be united in Christ
The Church is the household of God
The Church that is the people, are members of God’s household
What is a member
A member is a part of the body
in this case we are referring to the body of Jesus Christ
Ephesians 1:22-23
22 And he subjected everything under his feet and appointed him as head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.
1 Corinthians 12:12-13
12 For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink.
A member should be able to find within the body

A member has responsibilities to the body

They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So, then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one is to be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. 14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved—but only as through fire.
16 Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and that is what you are.
1 Corinthians 12:15-21
15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”
Built on The Foundation
Built on The Foundation
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.
In the OT we read of God’s temple, the place in which God would dwell
The first dwelling was the tabernacle which was built while the Israelites were in the wilderness
It was later made slightly more permanent in Shilo where is was destroyed by the Philistines in 1050 BC
The second dwelling or first temple was is known as Solomon’s Temple
God and David designed it but Solomon, David’s heir to the throne constructed it.
It was finished around 957 BC and was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon in 586 BC.
The second temple was known later as Herods temple
It was constructed under the Zerubbable and other Jewish exiles who had returned back to Jerusalem when the exile was over.
The work started around 516 BC, however, during Herods reign the temple was remodeled.
This temple was destroyed in 70 AD by Rome
What do these buildings have in common?
They were all built with human hands
See Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—9 not from works, so that no one can boast.
And none of them had Jesus Christ as the Cornerstone
The cornerstone is used to anchor the entire building as well as determine the lines in which the walls are built
21 In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of this new temple
The apostles and the prophets make up the foundation
The building itself is made up of the saints
every brick is a believer
every brick is united in Christ Jesus
When we are divided we are divided against ourselves
The damage that we do to one another is damage done to the very temple of God.
22 In him you are also being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.
We are together
We all have the Gospel in common
We all have redemption in common
We are all the temple of God
We are united in Christ Jesus
