The Basic Idea of Mediator:

• Go-between.

o Identification with both God and man. Jesus is exactly that.

• Personal: personal involvement.

Hebrews 8:

• Hebrews 8:1: Neat and brief summary statement.

• As believers, we have a perfect High Priest.

The Priesthood:

• Recognizing a problem: Man on one side and God on the other.

• Barrier is sin. Man is the problem.

• God’s character: righteous and holy.

• The justice of God says this: Sin must be punished. There is a need for a mediator.

An Effective Priest:

(a) Must remove the barrier and deal with sin.

(b) Bring man to God. Initiate fellowship (personal and permanent).

c) To ensure that (a) and (b) are maintained.

o Faith: Believing and appropriating individually.

One Mediatorship: Christ Jesus:

• John 14:6 and I Timothy 2:5.

• Jesus is the fulfillment of the blueprint.

The priesthood was authorized by the Old Covenant: major duty--to offer sacrifice.

Hebrew 8:6: But now: Christ is the Mediator of a Better Covenant.
