The Holy Wrath of God

(Introduction)

Have you ever said or heard people say that they are saved? ‘

Have you ever thought about what they mean?

What are we or they saved from?

We are saved from the Wrath of God.

Romans 5: 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

In order for one to understand salvation one must first understand what they are saved from.

Since God saved me 4 years ago I have not heard a single sermon on the wrath of God.

Gods wrath is to be feared, however it is also very beautiful.

There are many people and even preachers who are ashamed or even deny the wrath of God.

All many preachers say is God loves you.

(So today we will by the grace of God we will look at the Holy Perfect Wrath of God.)

-Pray for Grace to do this correctly-

We will just skim the surface, because God is uncomprehendable.

Wrath- As an attribute of God is the doctrine that God intensely hates all sin.

(God intensely hates all sin)

Attribute- one of the wonderful and lovely perfections of the divine character of God.

Why is it, important to study Gods attributes?

It is important because this is a means to know Him.

We will now look at some scripture that talks about Gods wrath.

Gods wrath or anger is mentioned more than Gods love.

Remember Jonah and Nineveh.

God was going to destroy Nineveh and He sent Jonah to tell them.

Jonah’s message from God was not smile God loves you. Yet that is all we hear today.

About 150 years later Nineveh went back to their old ways and God passed judgment on them.

Nahum 1:1-8 An oracle concerning Nineveh.

The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.

God's Wrath Against Nineveh

2 The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
and keeps wrath for his enemies.
3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
His way is in whirlwind and storm,
and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
he dries up all the rivers;
Bashan and Carmel wither;
the bloom of Lebanon withers.
5 The mountains quake before him;
the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
the world and all who dwell in it.

6 Who can stand before his indignation?
Who can endure the heat of his anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire,
and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
7 The Lord is good,
a stronghold in the day of trouble;
he knows those who take refuge in him.
8 But with an overflowing flood
he will make a complete end of the adversaries,
and will pursue his enemies into darkness.

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Psalm 7:11 (KJV)
11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

(again) Wrath- As an attribute of God is the doctrine that God intensely hates all sin.

Some of you may say “no God is love” You are correct to say God is love, However because God is love He must hate what opposes Him.

i

Many people are ashamed of this side of God, however God is perfect and so His wrath is perfect.

If God did not hate sin He would not be perfect.

Example German soldiers under Hitler

There is no blemish in God, not the slightest defect, nothing wrong at all with His Holy hatred of sin.

In fact if God was indifferent to sin there would be a blemish in His character.

Because God is Holy, He hates all sin: and because He hates all sin: His anger burns against the sinner every day.

Have you ever heard people say “God hates the sin but loves the sinner?”

Listen to this verse again.

Psalm 7:11 (KJV)
11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

If you are not in Christ, Gods anger burns against you everyday.

This should be a very fearful thing. You should tremble.

The very fact that you do not tremble and fear Him, shows that His wrath is being revealed right know in you.

The Wrath of God is two fold.

1.      The wrath of God is revealed now from heaven. (Romans 1:18)

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

2.      There is a wrath to come. (Revelation 6:15-16)

15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

I.                   First we will talk about the wrath of God revealed.

1.      God’s wrath is a present reality.

God’s wrath is displayed every moment of everyday.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

So the wrath of God is reveled now.

What or who is the wrath of God revealed to?

all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

So who is unrighteous and without godliness.

Romans 3:10-11 says “None is righteous, no not one, no one understands, no one seeks for God.

Therefore the wrath of God is revealed to every man outside of Christ.

We where all there at one time, or we are now out side of Christ.

There are only two types of people in this world. Those who have been reconciled to God by Christ alone, or those who are enemies of God, whom the Wrath of God is revealed and awaits.

Example In testimonies people say now I have a relationship with God.

We have from birth had a relationship with God, Children or enemies.

Which are you?

This should be a very scary thing.

Example - People suppressing the truth. (golfers & kids blaspheming God on you tube)

 Where can we see the wrath of God?

The wrath of God is an attribute that can not be denied.

One place we can see evidence of Gods wrath is in all the cemeteries.

People die everyday, every minute, and maybe every second.

God’s wrath was 1st revealed when the sentence of death was 1st pronounced, the earth cursed and men driven out of earthly paradise. (AW Pink)

Explain - Tell about fall of man and creation.

The same creation that declares Gods existence and His Glory also declares that God is the Enemy of sin and the avenger of the crimes of men.

Nahum 1:.4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
he dries up all the rivers;
Bashan and Carmel wither;
the bloom of Lebanon withers.
5 The mountains quake before him;
the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
the world and all who dwell in it.

6 Who can stand before his indignation?
Who can endure the heat of his anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire,
and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.

-We can not even conquer creation yet we shake our fist in God’s face everyday.

II.                Now we will look at the wrath to come

Notice John excluded no one from Gods wrath, kings to slaves, those who are not in Christ will taste for eternity the wrath of God.

God will punish His enemies rich and poor, famous and nobodies.

Do you want to see what the wrath of God to come will look like?

Isaiah 53:10 says “It was the will of the Lord to crush Him.”

The only way we are saved from the wrath of God is if Christ bore that wrath for us.

Trust in Christ alone for your salvation from the wrath of God.

We can not even fathom Gods love. I know we can not Fathom His wrath.

Example- You are standing at the bottom of a dam 1000 feet high and 1000 feet wide. Imagine that dam breaks and concrete and 1000 feet of water fall on you. That is nothing compared to the wrath of God.

The wrath of the Lamb will be so bad you will want that dam to collapse on you.

You will be begging for the rocks to fall on you and cover you.

There will be no escape from the wrath of Christ. Not even Hell, Christ will be in Hell pouring out wrath on all unbelievers, satan and his demons.

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

Saved from what?

We are saved from the wrath of Christ by Christ for Christ.

The only thing that separates some of you from this eternal wrath of God is your heart beat.

Everything from you have is a gift God. That breath you just took was a gift.

Jonathan Edwards said that “we are like spiders hanging over a fire on one strand of web and God has the scissors.”

God owes you nothing. If we got what we deserved it would be His wrath in Hell for eternity.

Repent of your sins trust in Christ alone for your salvation.

If you have trusted in Christ for your salvation, then this should drive you to your knees in praise.

Read Romans 3:23-27

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins. It was to show His righteousness at the present time, so that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded.

If you are in Christ rejoice in what He has done.

If you are not in Christ flee from the wrath of God into the arms of Christ.

Trust in Christ alone for your salvation.

No one can stand before God by themselves.

Nahum 1:2 The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
and keeps wrath for his enemies.
3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
His way is in whirlwind and storm,
and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
he dries up all the rivers;
Bashan and Carmel wither;
the bloom of Lebanon withers.
5 The mountains quake before him;
the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
the world and all who dwell in it.

6 Who can stand before his indignation?
Who can endure the heat of his anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire,
and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
7 The Lord is good,
a stronghold in the day of trouble;
he knows those who take refuge in him.
8 But with an overflowing flood
he will make a complete end of the adversaries,
and will pursue his enemies into darkness.

Trust in Christ alone for your salvation
