Jesus the Founder of our Salvation

FORGIVEN
The book of Hebrews links God’s saving power with his creative power. In other words, the power that brought the universe into being and that keeps it operating is the very power that removes (provides purification for) our sins. God created us, maintains us, and can forgive us. No sin is too big for the Ruler of the universe to forgive. He can and will forgive us when we come to him through his Son. Be honest with God; confess your sins to him. He will forgive and cleanse (see 1 John 1:9).1
The author of Hebrews begin with a waring for those who believe-
Hebrews 2:1 ESV
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
This message that has been proclaimed is a sure message-
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
This is the message of Salvation which the writer goes to say is “an anchor for our souls”. The Work of Christ is a complete work and it is a foundational work- It is solid.
The writers warns the reader to not drift from the message. We are the ones that change and are prone to wanderer away to try to find other means of happiness, or other means of fulfillment.
Yet apart from Christ there is no life-
John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
This message that was declared by angels in Luke 2- Is a message of great salvation. If we neglect this message that God Himself attests too
Hebrews 2:3–4 ESV
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Then what we truly neglect is our salvation. We can’t allow ourselves to be like driftwood that is tossed around by the storms of life, or being pulled this way and that way by wha the world says we need to be.
This message that we hold to is the message of our salvation which Christ Himself paid for on that cross

The Foundation of our Salvation:

Hebrews 2:5–11 ESV
For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
Our Creator is our savior-
The Foundation of the world and the Foundation of our Faith were laid be the Same Savior.
Hebrews Christ Came as a Human Being / 2:5–18

Jesus did “stoop” when He became man. And as a man He was a little lower than the angels in His humanity—although without losing in any sense His divine nature.

Billy Graham

John 1:1–3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Jesus was at that the beginning and as John says, “All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made.”- Jesus was active in the creation of the world. He was the agent of creation- meaning He was the means through which everything came to be “all things were made through Him.”
Hebrews 1:2 ESV
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
“He created the world”- We can take joy in the fact that the one who created everything is our savior and He can most assuredly created a new clean heart in you and in me!
How did He accomplish this? He went from Humiliation to Exaltation
Philippians 2:5–9 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
The Writer of Hebrews say it in Verse nine as:
Hebrews 2:9 ESV
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Christ became like us in order to Save us. Just as Jesus was active in the Creation, He is active in the New Creation. He is working in our hearts to takes us from Death to Life, Form Blind to seeing, From lost to being found, and From orphans to being adopted.
What did Jesus do by becoming like us?
He emptied Himself- Humbled Himself. Christ was humbled or made lower for a “little while.” This was to save us from our sins. He aquatinted Himself with our struggles and our sin.
God gave the best- His Son, the Word made Flesh. (Hebrews 2:10) - God Spoke at creation to bring everything into existence, and God speaks at our New Creation (2 Cor 5:17) to bring new life to those who are dead in their sins- God still speaks (Heb 1:1-4)
Christ is the display of the Grace of God- we got what we didn’t deserve; Salvation for our sins because Jesus tasted death for us. “Suffered and died so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.”
Hebrews Christ Came as a Human Being / 2:5–18

PERFECT THROUGH SUFFERING?

Jesus’ suffering made him a perfect leader, or pioneer, of our salvation (see 5:8–9). Jesus did not need to suffer for his own salvation because he was God. His perfect obedience (which led him down the road of suffering) demonstrates that he was the complete sacrifice for us. Through suffering, Jesus completed the work necessary for our salvation. And through suffering, Jesus understands our weaknesses.

Christ tasted death for everyone- or instead of everyone. Christ died so that you and I wouldn’t have too. “One for All.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
We have assurance because of the work of Jesus Christ-
Jesus died in our place, as our substitute (Heb 2:9)
Jesus faced suffering in order to provide us with salvation (Heb 2:10)
Jesus makes us Holy and accepts us into His family- even calling us brothers and sisters (Heb 2:11)

Our Savior knows our struggles-

Hebrews Christ Came as a Human Being / 2:5–18

When God’s Son took on flesh, he truly and bodily took on, out of pure grace, our being, our nature, ourselves. This was the eternal counsel of the triune God. Now we are in him. Where he is, there we are too, in the Incarnation, on the Cross, and in his resurrection. We belong to him because we are in him.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Hebrews 2:14–16 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
Sin and death are interconnected- Where there is sin there is death.
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We see this all through out the Bible and even all through out History. This is the very reason that Christ came. To destroy the one who has the power of death, the devil and deliver us from the slavery of death.
Hebrews Christ Came as a Human Being / 2:5–18

THE GREATEST HELP

Jesus frees and delivers us, providing the greatest help of all. The powerful results of his death and resurrection give us two assurances:

1. Christ destroys the author of death, the devil. Satan’s power has been broken and one day will be completely removed.

2. Christ destroys the fear of death. Christ’s death and resurrection set us free from the fear of death because death has been defeated.

Every person must die, but death is not the end; instead, it is the doorway to a new life. We have assurance that we will be resurrected from the dead. All who dread death should trust Christ to bring victory. Remember that Christ will not fail you. Live without fear. Trust the Savior.

Christ became like us; taking on flesh. Our savior is familiar with our with our struggles, and by dying in our place He has conquered the power of death and He has defeated the accuser the devil, by the washing away of our sins and making us righteous
Why did Jesus become like us? so that He could be a merciful and faithful High Priest- making sacrifice that would take away our sins
Hebrews 2:14-18- Christ became like us, taking on flesh! He was like us in every-way, yet without sin.
Our Savior Knows:
Our temptations
our struggles
our flaws and failures
our depression
our anxieties
our hurts
our sins
He is familiar with all of these and yet he chose to die in our place in order to conquer the power of death and defeat the devil.
Who is the devil?
1 Peter 5:8- Roaring lion seeking someone to devour
John 10:10 - He is a thief the comes to steal, kill, and destroy
Job 1:6- The Satan- or the advisory
Revelation 12:10- the accuser of the brethren
But He is a defeated Foe- Rev 12:7-11
Christ defeated death and the devil on the Cross- what was ment to be the greatest defeat turned into our greatest victory- A king on a Cross!

WE ARE EQUIPPED

Our salvation came with weapons of warfare. Their is still a struggle and a battle that we face as we live not to give into temptation and In Jesus Christ we have everything we need!
Hebrews 2:17–18 ESV
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Hebrews 2:17-18- Jesus is the priest who ministers on our behalf to God-
Our priest knows our weakness and temptations- and rather then just saying “hey you need to really work on this”- He Helps us When we are tempted.
What an amazing thought that when we are having temptations, no matter what they are, we can run to Jesus and He helps us.
He has given us all the tools we need
Ephesians 6:10–17 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
All of these are ours because of Jesus Christ. The call for us is to be “strong in the Lord” and to stand not in our own strength, but “in the strength of His might.” The aromor that we are provided with are the works that Christ did in our salvation:
Helmet- Salvation through Christ
Breastplate- Righteousness which we have recieved through Christ
The belt of Truth- Jesus in the way the Truth and the life- Jesus is the truth if God revealed
The shoes of the gospel of peace- The gospel is the Good-news of our salvation in Jesus Christ- We are redeemed.
We have the Shield- This is our faith in the work of Jesus Christ- I am redeemed because Jesus says I am- I am set free because of the work of Jesus- My faith is my assurance of my Salvation
The Sword of the Word- God speaks- He spoke through the prophets and through Moses and the Law, He Speaks a more sure word through Jesus “The Word made Flesh” and He is continuing to Speak through His Word- We fight the lies of the enemy by God speaking to us
Through Jesus death and the devil are defeated. WE can stand strong in Christ and have assurance and help when we are tempted.
