Introduction

The book of Romans illuminates us on the saving power of God through the gospel.
Salvation becomes a pertinent topic because of one thing: Sin.
Sin has wreaked havoc in the world. Above all, it has the capacity to separate us from God. God desires fellowship, so when he deals with the issue of sin it’s not a bashing but a reminder that he wants that fellowship.
Sin is something the church must always remind people of.
Rom 1-3 - All Have Sinned, but there is justification [Rom 3:24] through God’s grace by faith [Rom 3:26]
Rom 4 - A justification through faith apart from the law [Accessing Justification]
Rom 5 - A justification that blesses [Rom 5:1-5] in spite of [Rom 5:6-9]
Chapter 5 ends by explaining that The Law caused sin to increase, which then caused grace to abound. However this is not a opening for sin to reign

“shall I continue in sin?”

For some this may have been a logical conclusion, but Paul says, “no”
Here are some reasons why we cannot continue in sin:
We are dead to sin (vs. 2;6-7)
We died to Christ and now raised to walk in a new way (vs. 4-5)
Sin should no longer have the power to master us (vs. 12-14) [Christ gives us the power to do this]
We are no longer slaves to sin but righteousness! (vs.16-17) “who you belong to has changed” Application: Has your owner changed? [more on this later!]

Here are some things to Remember

Remember what Jesus did to get you where you are (Rom 6:3-6; 10) - THE SACRIFICE
Remember you serve a Holy God (Rom 6:12-13) - THE PURITY
Remember the ultimate consequences of Sin (Rom 6:21-23) - THE EFFECT

Here are some things to Do

Many verbs used are in the active voice (Rom 6:2; 5; 11-12; 13;)
This means that there are some things I need to do.
“present yourselves” (Rom 6:13) this phrase means to stand by to demonstrate [waiting to go into the interview room or someone waiting to go on stage] and your members as “instruments” [of righteousness] Application: whatever you were devoting your members to before needs to change
“slaves for obedience” (Rom 6:16-17) intentional responsibility towards morality. Doing things to ensure I do not sin.

Where are you today?

All you really need to do is make up your mind that you want to become a “slave” to righteousness. Whether you like it or not, you are someone’s slave!
Shall I continue in sin? I pray not.
