Introduction:
One of my special talents and biggest area that needs work is wasting time. On average Americans spend 3 hours and 45 minutes looking at their phone per day! On top of that they spend an average of just over 3 hours a day watching TV. That is equivalent to 57 days a year!
Today I want to do something a little bit different. I want you to open your Bibles to Philippians 3:13-14 and then open the Hymnal in front of you to page 566.
As we begin a new year many have made the traditional resolution. I want to challenge you to make 4 as we break down the five verses of this song as they pertain to our scripture reading.
Scripture Reading:
Philippians 3:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Transition: Hasten means to hurry, or run to, or waste no time. So today let’s resolve to waste no time. Let’s begin with Verse 1.
I Am Resolved...
No longer to linger
Distracted by the world around
Instead set your sights on something higher. Vs 14 the prize of the high calling
Transition- Stop wasting time being distracted by everything around you
I Am Resolved...
To Go to the Savior
This means to run to Jesus! Repent, believe in your hearts and trust Him
Take your troubles, your pain, your conflicts, your animosity and leave it at his feet
Paul says in vs 13 reaching forth unto those things which are before.
Jesus is the one we go toward, but you can’t if you are being held back and held down by the anchor of sin
Transition- Stop wasting time dragging around old baggage and go to Him
I Am Resolved...
To Follow the Savior
Be faithful
Be Obedient
Be worthy of the high calling
Paul states I press toward the mark
Verse 4 can be added into this as well. If we are following Christ then it leads us to enter the Kingdom. However, as the verse says there may be some opposition from friend and foe as we commit ourselves to following Jesus’ example.
The more we follow Christ, the more we get to know Him and His expectations and our actions change. This will bring others guilt to light and they will not be happy. But you must continue to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God!
Transition- Stop wasting time going in your own direction for the comfort of yourself and others and follow the example that is set before you.
I Am Resolved...
To lead others to Christ-
Do Not Be Ashamed to be a Christian. Most people want to keep it a secret about the good news of Jesus Christ.
Don’t soften the blow of the truth
The song says come without delay… Let them know that they are wasting time that they don’t have.
Be a warrior for Christ, tell someone what He has done for you
I want to see all my friends in Heaven, I want to them to experience what I am going to experience when the day comes and until it does I want to have the conversations about God that the spirit leads us to have.
Conclusion: Will you stop wasting time today being distracted, carrying around the weight of your sin and shame? Will you stop wasting time going in your own direction and will you stop wasting time keeping the good news of Jesus Christ a secret?
Resolve this year to Go to the Savior, to follow Him and tell others. Let’s not waste anymore time.
