Overflow-Pour It Out!

We’ve been talking about overcoming: overcoming out fears, worries, sins, addictions-all the things that cause anxiety. God provides his Holy Spirit to teach us, keep us focused on doing things God’s way.

By allowing His Spirit to work in us and dedicating ourselves to following Jesus, God helps us overcome and live the life of joy and fulfillment that He wants for us.

It is really God’s love for us-despite our shortcomings and failures-that enables us to overcome. He continues to pour himself out and fill us with His overflowing love…it’s that overflowing love that we want to turn our attention to now..

All kinds of biblical examples of God’s overflowing love:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

(Mal 3:10 ESV)

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!

(Psa 31:19 ESV)

Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

(Mar 10:29-30 ESV)

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

(1Jn 3:1-2 NIV)

Another side to this…God also pours out love on those who have yet to turn to Him…

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(Rom 5:8 ESV)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

(Joh 3:16 ESV)

  Not just long life…eternal life!

These are just a few of the many impressions of God’s loving generosity you get throughout the Bible.

You get the impression that God is a generous love and give of gifts. He’s got an abundance of blessings he is anxious to pour out on whoever He chooses.

I have one more passage I want to have us look at related to God’s overflowing love:

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

(Psa 23:5 NIV)

Do you get the sense of God’s love and favor here? These are the words of someone who has experienced God’s lavish love. He doesn’t just say You’ve prepared a table for me…but “in the presence of my enemies.”  This is God saying to you and everyone who can see-even those who don’t like you-that “I LOVE YOU!”. This is the extent of God’s love for you.

And let me just tell you…if you’ve never experienced God’s love for you before…just wait…keeping seeking and serving Him. For myself, I’ve had a sense of God’s love for a while…but even with that, He continues to surprise me with even greater expressions of His love and shows me I still only know a little taste of what He really thinks of me...story of last weekend…overwhelmed with how much God loves me…pray the same feeling for you all throughout your lives as you continue to give you lives to Him…

Back to Paslm 23…last part gives an image I want to develop more this morning…You anoint my head with oil…my cup overflows…

Picture a cup....overflowing…this is the image of God’s overflowing love for us.

Get out cup, pitcher…fill it up…

Cup is our life…God fills it up over and over…

As you live out your life…facing obstacles and frustrations of life…giving of yourself to others over and over…you get empty. You need God to fill you up again.

I realized something new about this myself just a few days ago…I was feeling the overwhelming weight of live…Just come back from this incredible experience with God..life came crashing back on…overwhelmed with trying to juggle all the responsibilities and pressures of life…part of me wanting to just give up.

Realized that you have to make yourself choose to remember God’s love in those moments..and let Him fill you back up.  We sometimes allow ourselves to remain empty and dwell on those things…

But if we make ourselves turn back to the images of God’s love He has given us…remembering times you’ve experienced it…maybe a song/poem..something you’ve written or carry around with you..forces you to remember and then you can ask God to fill you back up…

But remember…God doesn’t just fill us...doesn’t just fill to brim, then we empty out, then fills back up again…He fills us to overflowing…”My cup overflows”.

A couple of things this brings to mind..

1) What to you think of when you think of a cup overflowing…does God pour himself carefully into us??Video of filling to just overflowing then stop

No…we are talking about lavish…over the top outpouring…more like this

Video of dumping and overfilling.

2)Pitcher nowhere near represents the amount of God’s love..it too will empty.  Imagine something more like this….video of crashing waterfall…constant…unending flow of God’s love.

Video look of unstoppable overflow

Now with this image before us….knowing that this is what God wants to do in our lives…the big question I have for you today is…what do you do with the overflow?

Where does the stuff spilling out of your life go?  Does it just land on the floor somewhere and evaporate away?

Evan’s drawing…moldy cups!

We want to become like Christ....we are God’s tools/instruments in the world today….

            …pour into others.

…God is the ultimate source of love we have…want to take the overflow and pour it…no…lavishly dump it into the lives of others…whether they deserve it or not…

Pan out…showing cups below getting filled-by us and God

I want to start a couple of things today…I want to equip you with ways to live and love like this…lettings your lives overflow into the lives of others.

1-Easter invites…hand out around area

2-Overflow cards…remember to start online list of ideas
