1 Sam 17

1 Samuel 17 KJV 1900
1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. 3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. 4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. 6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders. 7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him. 8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. 9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul. 13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul. 15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Beth-lehem. 16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. 17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren; 18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge. 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. 20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle. 21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army. 22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren. 23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. 25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel. 26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him. 28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? 30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner. 31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. 38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. 39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. 40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. 41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands. 48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. 52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. 55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 56 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling is. 57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.

4: FLIGHT MINDSET

1 SAM 22

1 Samuel 22 KJV 1900
1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. 2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. 3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. 4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. 5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth. 6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;) 7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; 8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? 9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10 And he inquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. 11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord. 13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house? 15 Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. 16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father’s house. 17 And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord. 18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword. 20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the Lord’s priests. 22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father’s house. 23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
These 4 Mindsets are very important as we live our Christian life

1: FAITH MINDSET Heb 11:1

Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Now allow us for While this morning Look at the FAITH Mindset.

The great passage on faith in our Life Manual is Hebrews Chapter 11

Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

May I suggest this qualification on FAITH

It is SERVICE out of or Motivated by LOVE

What Is Faith and Why Is it Important?

Faith. It’s a word we hear thrown around all the time.

Keep the faith.

Walking in faith.

Having faith.

So what is faith?

Faith has several different definitions.

1. Complete trust or confidence in someone or something. 2. Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than truth. 3. A system of religious belief. 4. A firmly held belief or theory

What Does the Bible Say about Faith?

The Bible says that faith is confidence in what we hope for and the assurance that the Lord is working, even though we cannot see it.

Faith knows that no matter what the situation, in our lives or someone else’s, that the Lord is working in it.

The Hebrew word for faith is “aw man which means “support.”

This is perfect because faith is like “the Lord’s support” to us because he is working in every situation for his glory.

Regardless of what we think, He always knows best, and there are many times we have to see by faith and not our own eyes.

5 Bible Verses About Faith:

-Genesis 15:6,
Genesis 15:6 KJV 1900
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
-Hebrews 11:1-3,
Hebrews 11:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
”-Exodus 14:31,
Exodus 14:31 KJV 1900
31 And Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses.
-1 Samuel 12:24
1 Samuel 12:24 KJV 1900
24 Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
-1 Samuel 2:9
1 Samuel 2:9 KJV 1900
9 He will keep the feet of his saints, And the wicked shall be silent in darkness; For by strength shall no man prevail.

Where Does Faith Come From?

-Ephesians 2:8-9
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Faith can only come from a new heart, regenerated by God; therefore, faith is a gift from God.

It is the unique way that God uses to bring salvation to his people.

We strengthen our faith by reading the Bible and hearing the gospel.

The more we immerse ourselves in truth, the more our confidence grows.

Everyone who is saved has been gifted faith.

It is the ability to believe God is who He says He is, trusting Him in all things for all things.

Faith also helps to combat unbelief and motivates us to do what God desires us to do.

Not only do we grow our faith by reading Scripture and praying in our own time, but also by hearing the message in church with other believers.

Justification by faith means that God has removed the penalty of our sins and has declared us to be righteous.

By God's work, we have peace with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1
Romans 5:1 KJV 1900
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

What’s the Difference Between Faith and Belief?

Faith and belief are often used in the same context, sometimes interchangeably, but they are not quite the same thing.

Belief is a strongly held opinion about an idea or worldview.

Beliefs are also opinions that you form about what you read, hear, or see.

Beliefs can change over time, as you grow and learn new things.

Faith is not something you start and build from; faith can only be received, it must be given by God.

True faith can take on doubts and questions, but it remains intact.

We can grow in our faith, but the foundation is always the same.

James 2:19 says,
James 2:19 KJV 1900
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

You can believe there is a God, even that there is one God, but do you believe He is your God?

God produces faith in us by giving us new hearts and opening our eyes to see that He is our God and we need Him.

Does your faith in God change the way you live your life?

There are some who say they believe in God, but the way they live their life does not change; they are motivated by other factors.

Faith changes how we live our lives, faith motivates us to keep moving in life.

Having faith in the Bible means trusting that God’s Word is the truth.

The faith that God began in us will grow when exposed to God's Word.

Rom 10:17
Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

It’s knowing that every time you read the Bible, the word of God is being imparted in you.

The Bible says that faith is not silly or irrational. It is not a feeling of closeness to God either. Instead, faith is being able to trust God for what He has promised in His Word.

5 Examples of People in the Bible Who Had Faith

1. Mary was faithful to God when she was chosen to be the mother of his son. Mary trusted her God and the role He had chosen for her.

-Luke 1:35-38
Luke 1:35–38 KJV 1900
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

2. Abraham had faith in God when he was called to sacrifice his only son as a burnt offering.

He set out the next morning after God told him where to go, he had faith that God would provide.

-Genesis 22:1-8
Genesis 22:1–8 KJV 1900
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

3. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had faith when they were thrown into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar..

They had no doubts that God would save them.

Daniel 3:17-18 -Daniel 3:27-28
Daniel 3:17–18 KJV 1900
17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
Daniel 3:27–28 KJV 1900
27 And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellers, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them. 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

4. Esther had faith in going to the king unannounced and exposing Haman’s plan to kill the Jews.

'" -Esther 4:12-16
Esther 4:12–16 KJV 1900
12 And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words. 13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews. 14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? 15 Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer, 16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

5. Moses had faith when God asked him to lead the Israelite’s out of Egypt and across the red sea, away from everything they knew.

Exodus 14:10-14
Exodus 14:10–14 KJV 1900
10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord. 11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. 13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. 14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

How to Grow in Faith

There are several different ways we can grow in our faith.

1. Ask God to increase your faith.

If you are struggling in your faith, ask Him for more of it. He will be glad to bestow it through the Holy Spirit.

2. Focus on obeying God.

No one is perfect and we all make mistakes, but if you focus on following God’s word and commands, your faith will grow naturally.

3. Spend time reading and hearing God’s word.

Spend time every day reading God’s word and soak it into your heart and mind. If your lifestyle is busy, listen to a sermon or a Christian podcast. Putting His word into your heart and soul will fortify your faith in the rough times.

4. Spend time with other believers.

We are meant to worship together, pray together, and share our faith with each other. Hearing about others journeys in faith can be encouraging. Also study the Bible together, encouraging each other in godly disciplines.

5. Spend time in fervent prayer.

Scheduling a specific time each day to spend with God in prayer makes a huge difference. This is your time alone with Him to discuss anything that is on your heart and mind. Be still and listen carefully and your faith will grow in abundance.

How Do We Live by Faith and Not By Sight?

Living in faith and not by sight means that you are willing to go into the unknown.

It’s trusting God even though you don’t know where He’s leading you or what the outcome will be.

One may be living in faith over a specific situation for almost three years. They have been praying over this situation fervently.

They don’t know how it’s going to turn out or where it’s going to lead.

All they know is that God is working, and they are waiting patiently to see the outcome.

It’s not easy and it’s not fun, but hey know that He’s in control and that is where I find my peace.

How to Keep the Faith in Times of Trouble

1. Keep a positive attitude, reflecting on God's promises.

We are to praise Jesus in all things and in all circumstances.

2. Surrender your circumstances to God.

It can be so easy to get upset and shake our fists at Him when things aren’t going right. Instead, ask Him for help and to change your circumstances. Let Him take the wheel and trust what He is going to do.

3. Be generous.

The Bible says even in times of trouble, we are to give. It seems counterintuitive when you are struggling to keep your head above water. However, in giving and blessing someone else, you are blessing yourself too. God loves a cheerful giver.

4. Spend more time in the Word.

This will help keep you grounded and not going in another direction due to confusion or desperation.

5. Reach out to friends and family.

One of the best things to do in hard times is to draw close to those who love you most.

Sit down and discuss your situation with a close friend or family member and let them give you some encouragement.

Being connected to others is essential. Having faith means we are part of a covenant body of believers, a family of brothers and sisters united in Jesus Christ.

The truest act of faith, which is made possible by God's gift of grace to us, is complete trust in the Lord through every circumstance, even when we do not understand why something is happening or not happening.

WHAT is FAITH Mindset?

(Hebrews 11:1, KJV).
Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 is probably the most concise definition of faith found in the Bible.

It is considered the classical definition of faith.

Faith is both the substance of things hoped for and the evidence that things exist that are not yet perceived with the senses.

1. Faith Is Substance

The New Testament was written in Koine [common] Greek.

The Greek word translated “substance in Hebrews 11:1 is hupostasis, literally, “that which stands under.”

The derived meaning is “that which has real existence, the basic essence, the actual reality, the substance of something” [Hobart E. Freeman, ThD, Faith (Claypool, IN: Faith Publications, n.d.), p. 3].

It is a condition of the human heart that is as real to God as the thing we asked for will be to us when we receive it.

It is the exact image of the thing for which we ask (hupostasis is translated “image” in Hebrews 1:3).

Hebrews 1:3 KJV 1900
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

When we receive what we have prayed for the image is replaced by the actuality.

2. Faith Is Evidence

The Greek word translated “evidence” is elegchos, which basically means “conviction.”

John writes, (1 John 5:14-15, KJV).

1 John 5:14–15 KJV 1900
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

The existence of the God-kind of faith in the human heart is the evidence that what we have prayed for exists.

Faith, based on the Word of God, is the evidence not what we see or don’t see not good or bad circumstances.

Faith is not based on human feeling but rather it is based squarely on the fact of what God says.

The evidence is not found in the feeling, rational, visible or sense realm.

3. What Faith Is Not Faith is not mere human hope.

Faith is based on the Word of God alone.

Human hope may be based on the sands of wishful thinking or human desire, rather than on the rock of the Word of God.

Doubt and hope raise the question, “What shall I do?”

Faith says, “I have done!”

The common phrase, “I am hoping and praying” is incorrect.

“I have prayed and am believing” is more scriptural.

Faith is not natural human faith.

In order to function in life, we must exercise a natural faith.

We have faith in natural laws such as gravity and inertia and assume that they will work the same every day.

If the universe were unpredictable and untrustworthy, chaos would reign and life as we know it would be impossible.

We trust inanimate machines.

By turning an ignition key, flipping on a light switch, boarding an aircraft, we exercise faith in machines.

We trust vegetables and animals we assume they will perform according to our past experience.

We trust other human beings.

We trust our surgeon, our spouse, our pilot, etc.

However, faith in God is supernatural gift from God.

We can examine the nature of faith in God in the next chapter.

Faith is not mental assent.

John Wesley warned in his time that there was a dangerous substitute for faith that he called “mental assent.”

He was caught in this dangerous trap and only escaped after failing as a missionary in America.

Faith is of the heart (human spirit) and not merely the head (human reason).

Simply agreeing that God exists and that his Word (the Bible) is true is not Biblical faith.

James states that demons believe in this manner and tremble in fear of judgment: (James 2:19, KJV).

James 2:19 KJV 1900
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Faith is not a psychological attitude.

Mere positive thinking may have some good results, but it is not Biblical faith.

Faith is not sight.

Faith is not based on mere sensory perception or human reasoning.

Paul says, We live by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7, ).

2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 1900
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

4. Attributes of Faith Faith thanks God beforehand.

If a husband tells his wife that he has placed a hundred dollar bill in her purse for her birthday, she thanks him immediately.

Why? Because she trusts him.

She knows it is hers before she sees it.

Jesus says, (Mark 11:24,

Mark 11:24 KJV 1900
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Mark 11:24 KJV 1900
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
God does not answer biblical prayer with “No” or with substitutes.
Paul says, For no matter how many promises God has made, they are `Yes’ in Christ. … (2 Cor 1:20 ).
2 Corinthians 1:20 KJV 1900
20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

Faith will endure to the end.

Abraham waited 25 years for Isaac to be born.

Caleb waited 40 years for his land. Noah waited 120 years for his physical salvation.

Faith does not look at the calendar, but to Christ.

Hope may last a few minutes or a few months.

Faith will endure until it is replaced by the thing for which we are believing.

D. L. Moody said, Faith that fizzles out at the finish, had a flaw in it from the first.

Conclusion: Dr. Freeman concludes: Faith is not hope.

Faith is the means by which we receive those things we hope for.

Neither is faith sight.

Faith is the evidence of things not seen.

Faith can only operate in the realm of the invisible concerning those things we hope for and do not yet see.

Faith cannot exist in the visible realm.

When the things we hope for are manifested to our sight, then faith, the invisible “substance,” having done its work, is supplanted by the visible substance, that is, the things we hope for.

When the actuality comes into view, then the image (faith) vanishes. (Hobart E. Freeman, Faith, p. 4).

Biblical faith is an absolute requirement for answered prayer.

The writer of Hebrews states, (Hebrews 11:6, KJV).

Hebrews 11:6 KJV 1900
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
