Hosea 12

Hosea 12:1–14 NET
Ephraim continually feeds on the wind; he chases the east wind all day; he multiplies lies and violence. They make treaties with Assyria, and send olive oil as tribute to Egypt. The Lord also has a covenant lawsuit against Judah; he will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds. In the womb he attacked his brother; in his manly vigor he struggled with God. He struggled with an angel and prevailed; he wept and begged for his favor. He found God at Bethel, and there he spoke with him! As for the Lord God Almighty, the Lord is the name by which he is remembered! But you must return to your God, by maintaining love and justice, and by waiting for your God to return to you. The businessmen love to cheat; they use dishonest scales. Ephraim boasts, “I am very rich! I have become wealthy! In all that I have done to gain my wealth, no one can accuse me of any offense that is actually sinful.” “I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again as in the days of old. I spoke to the prophets; I myself revealed many visions; I spoke in parables through the prophets.” Is there idolatry in Gilead? Certainly its inhabitants will come to nothing! Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Surely their altars will be like stones heaped up on a plowed field! Jacob fled to the country of Aram, then Israel worked to acquire a wife; he tended sheep to pay for her. The Lord brought Israel out of Egypt by a prophet, and due to a prophet Israel was preserved alive. But Ephraim bitterly provoked him to anger; so he will hold him accountable for the blood he has shed, his Lord will repay him for the contempt he has shown.

Context:

Israel has forgotten the prophecies of God. Forgotten about the commandments of God, and the covenant that they made with God. Israel forgot that God is the one who supplies all their needs; food, shelter, and clothing. Israel’s pride is what leads them to their forgetfulness.

Content:

God is warning the Nation of Israel of their upcoming judgment. He is calling them to their breaking of their covenant that they made with God. They have bought into a belief that God’s grace would last forever, and are taking His grace for granted.

Intent:

God is constantly reminding His creation of who He is, and what He is, and the love He has for His creation. From the very beginning to the very end, His Word is a consistent reminder of all the things that God has done, is doing, and will do.

Circumstance:

Israel has forgotten their God, and is now blatantly ignoring their God. They have become deceitful in their business, dishonest in their relationships, and disobeying their religion.

Situation:

Israel finds themselves under the human banner of great success. They are wealthy and healthy., but instead of giving God the praise and worship; they praise themselves, the gods of their neighboring countries, and provoke God to anger.

Bridging the Gap

Psalm 103
Psalm 103:1–22 NET
Praise the Lord, O my soul! With all that is within me, praise his holy name! Praise the Lord, O my soul! Do not forget all his kind deeds! He is the one who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, who delivers your life from the Pit, who crowns you with his loyal love and compassion, who satisfies your life with good things, so your youth is renewed like an eagle’s. The Lord does what is fair, and executes justice for all the oppressed. The Lord revealed his faithful acts to Moses, his deeds to the Israelites. The Lord is compassionate and merciful; he is patient and demonstrates great loyal love. He does not always accuse, and does not stay angry. He does not deal with us as our sins deserve; he does not repay us as our misdeeds deserve. For as the skies are high above the earth, so his loyal love towers over his faithful followers. As far as the eastern horizon is from the west, so he removes the guilt of our rebellious actions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on his faithful followers. For he knows what we are made of; he realizes we are made of clay. A person’s life is like grass. Like a flower in the field it flourishes, but when the hot wind blows by, it disappears, and one can no longer even spot the place where it once grew. But the Lord continually shows loyal love to his faithful followers, and is faithful to their descendants, to those who keep his covenant, who are careful to obey his commands. The Lord has established his throne in heaven; his kingdom extends over everything. Praise the Lord, you angels of his, you powerful warriors who carry out his decrees and obey his orders! Praise the Lord, all you warriors of his, you servants of his who carry out his desires! Praise the Lord, all that he has made, in all the regions of his kingdom! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
