Introduction: If God's children fail to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit, Christianity will ultimately fade into the background of humanistic religion. The believer must be persuaded that without walking in the Spirit, they will fail to live with assurance and real purpose!

1) Walking With Assurance

A. Knowing the real Gospel
Authentication determines the value and worth of everything.
The source of the Gospel
5:1 & 1:11-12
I believe we can conclusively say that the Gospel of man’s liberation is not an invention of man or something they thought up.
It is something that God sovereignly designed and revealed unto humanity.
The salvation of the Gospel (1:6)
Quote: “Any gospel that is not the gospel of grace is not the true gospel.” (Adrian Rogers)
What it is not:
Not a creed: not saved by the plan but by “the man.”
Not a code: (2:21) If salvation is by a moral code then Calvary was the greatest blunder in history.
Not a cause: You just have to love people.
Not a church: not believing in something; but receiving someone.
Listen, you can’t borrow it, buy it, steal it, beg it nor steal it!
That is why it is called “God’s grace.” He completed it through Jesus Christ.
You can’t delete it or add to it! When Jesus finishes something He completes it!
Quote: God’s love is an action toward us, not a reaction to us. It is an action toward us; it comes out of God’s nature. It is not based on what we are but on who He is. He is love. Therefore, we don’t try to put ourselves in a position where God can love us. We react to the love of God that is there. ...God does not change you so He can love you. He loves you so He can change you. (Adrian Rogers)
B. Freedom from bondage
You might ask, “Since you have already said we are free in Jesus, why would mention bondage?”
The Devil will use all of his resources to lead you away from your assurance.
Notice what Paul had to deal with (2:4-5)
We call these type of people “grace busters.”
They bring their list of rules, rituals and regulations.
The devil will even play mind tricks with you about the sin you committed or the reasons why you are experiencing what you’re experiencing.

2) Walking With Real Purpose

A. Walking dead to sin (5:13; 2:20))
You now live an executed life!
We need to get one thing straight, Jesus did not just take your sins to the cross!
Sometimes we will make the mistake of just saying, “Jesus died for my sins.” He did, but He died so that you would too.
Notice Romans 6:6
The problem is not what you do, but what you are!
You now live an exchanged life!
Yes, Jesus died, but he also rose again!
Illustration: Now, suppose I commit murder. They put me in the electric chair. They pull the switch; I twitch and die. A coroner comes, takes my pulse, gives the vital signs, and writes out a certificate of death. Can the law do anything else to me? No sir. Now, suppose, by a miracle, I come back to life, can they put me in the chair again? Absolutely not! That would be double jeopardy. I’ve already died. Friend, you died with Christ. The law has no more demand on you. You have paid in full, yet you live because He died and He rose again and you died with Him and you rose with Him. (Adrian Rogers)
B. Walking preferring others (v13)
A warning of self promotion (vv14-15, 17)
This will come naturally to you (5:17)
The wealth of loving others
When you fully surrender self only then will you bear the kind of fruit that makes an eternal difference; fruits of the Spirit.
Not only are we called unto a liberation from the bondage of sin and self, but also from service; service to sin.
You are now called to a much higher level of service; serving with the love of the gospel.
The Spirit will always lead you to practice a Gospel shaped love that you might show grace to those who hurt you. Prov. 10:11-12
Without love the Gospel would be empty, so are we when we remove brotherly love. 1 Cor. 13:1
Because of the love that was woven into the Gospel, Jesus made the best decisions during His earthly ministry. Phil. 1:9-10
Listen, this is the only kind of love God will teach you. 1 Thess. 4:9
