We've all heard the saying, history repeats itself. And it's true. It's true primarily because we have the propensity to forget. When we forget past atrocities, the sacrifices, when we forget the blood, sweat and tears, forget where we came from, or when we forget what we should not forget … history repeats itself. Like in my house, there is a certain person who has the propensity to forget important days of the year, and every year gets in trouble.
So, we have the propensity to forget. God knows this. He knows that we have the propensity to forget that which should be remembered, and we also have the propensity to remember that which should be forgotten.
So God, in His infinite wisdom, provides in His Word things that should be remembered and things that should be forgotten. In the OT, God commanded Moses and the priests to make priestly garments with gems and inscriptions, to wear tassels, to make offerings, to write God’s Word around the house, to celebrate festivals and more - all for the purpose of remembering God, remembering His statutes, remembering what He has done and in remembering to serve as a witness to children.
Israel was told to remember that they were slaves in Egypt and that God delivered them which a mighty hand. They were told to remember that it is God who provides their wealth. In Psalm 42 we are told that when we are downcast, we should remember the Lord and trust him.
When Israel crossed the Jordan river on dry ground, they were told to take 12 stones and set them up as pillars to remember. King David said,
Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered,
O offspring of Israel his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!
He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
Remember his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
After God gave Israel victory over the Philistines, the prophet Samuel raised a stone and named it Ebenezer so that all Israel would remember what God did.
Jonah, while in the belly of a fish with his life ebbing away, remembered the Lord and prayed and God rescued him.
You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands—
remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
The apostle Paul told Timothy,
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.
Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God?
You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.
Let today be a day of remembering - remembering all that God through Christ has done for you.
