Matthew 13:53-58

Introduction

Matthew 13 – Eight parables of the kingdom

The parable of the sower and the parable of the wheat and tares are the two most significant ones

They teach the four basic responses of man to the gospel and that the saved and the unsaved will exist together.

Matthew 13:53-16:4 – Eight life events of the Lord that correspond to and demonstrate the truths of those parables

1.       The offense taken against Jesus by His home town of Nazareth (13:54-58)

2.       Herod (14:1-12), whose heart was also hard but who rejected the Lord more out of indifference than hatred.

3.       The feeding of the multitude and the healing of the sick in Gennesaret (14:13-12; 34-36).  In both instances, the initial fascination with Jesus was positive but superficial.

4.       The twelve disciples, whose “good soil” was evidenced by their worshiping Jesus after He walked on the water and calmed the storm (14:22-33).

5.       The scribes and Pharisees who tried to find an excuse to condemn Jesus (15:1-20).

6.       The healing of the Canaanite woman’s daughter (15:21-28).

7.       The healing to the sick Galileans (15:29-39).

8.       The testing of Jesus by the Pharisees (16:1-4)

This is Jesus second encounter with the people of Nazareth (first encounter: Luke 4:16-30).

From this encounter we can learn three important truths about unbelief.

1A.      Unbelief Treats the Sacred as Common (13:53-56)

1B.      Because unbelief focuses on the natural not the supernatural.  (1 Corinthians 2:14)

The natural man will not receive the supernatural.  (Romans 1:20-21; 1 Corinthians 1:22-24)

Ø      Because they reject the revelation of God.

Ø      Because the gospel does not conform to their pattern of thinking.

The natural man can not receive the supernatural.  (John 3:3-7)

2B.      Because unbelief feeds the flesh not on the Spirit.  (Romans 8:5-8)

Romans 8:5-6 - The unregenerate man’s basic orientation is against God.

Ø      Because his mindset, affections, mental process and will are set on satisfying the cravings of his flesh.  (Romans 8:5)

Ø      Because he is carnally (fleshly) minded he is doomed.  (Romans 8:6)

Romans 8:7-8 - The unregenerate man is God’s enemy.

Ø      Enmity, to be hostile, often translated enemy.

James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses!  Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?  Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Ø      Cannot please God, (ou dunamai) literally does not have the ability to please (aresko) to be acceptable to God

3B.      Because unbelief values the things of this world above the things of God.  (Matthew 19:16-22)

2A.      Unbelief Stumbles Over the Truth (13:57)

Offended, (skandalizo) causing to stumble or trip up and is the term from which our English scandalize is derived.

1B.      Because unbelief blinds the mind to the truth (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).

It blinds their minds to the truth of the gospel.

It blinds their minds to the glory (deity) of Christ.

2B.      Because unbelief loves darkness and hates the light (John 3:18-21).

Men love darkness because their deeds are evil (3:19-20).

Only after their hearts are changed will they come to the light (3:21).

3B.      Because unbelief is self-centered and self-serving.

Ephesians 5:29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it...

Why else would the Scriptures constantly command us to die to self?

Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Colossians 3:5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

3A.      Unbelief can Hinder the Work of God (13:58)

1B.      God’s ability to work is not dependant upon man’s faith.

2 Kings 5:9-15 - The healing of Naaman

Ø      Naaman not only did not have faith, he rebelled.

Ø      Naaman’s faith proceeded from his healing rather that produced his healing.

Luke 17:12-19 - The ten lepers Jesus healed

Ø      All ten lepers were healed.

Ø      Only one leper gave evidence of faith in Christ.

2B.      God often chooses to punish unbelief by withholding the outward evidence of His power and grace (Matthew 12:38-39).

Application

The greatest danger of unbelief is that it curses man’s soul for eternity.

Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
