Matthew 13:47-52
Introduction
The last two of the eight parables on the kingdom found in Matthew 13 illustrate the separation and judgment of unbelievers and the preaching and teaching of God’s ministers.
The first gives a warning, and the second gives a call to proclaim that warning to a condemned world.
The parable of the dragnet
Three methods of fishing in Galilee
Ø      Line and hook (Matthew 17:24-27)
Ø      One man net called a /amphiblestron /(Matthew 4:18-19)
Ø      Large dragnet (/sagene/) took a number of men to handle it.
It would gather all kinds of things in its path.
The fishermen would then have to sort through and keep only the good fish.
The point of the parable
Ø      During this age there are both good and evil men in the world.
Ø      There is coming a day when God will judge men and separate the good from the evil (Revelation 20:11-15).
The parable of the householder
The role of the head of the household
Ø      To provide for the entire family.
Ø      He would keep his supply in his storehouse this would contain both new and old goods.
The point of the parable
Ø      The disciples were charged with *bringing forth* the treasure of both the Old Testament and what would be the New Testament
Let us examine the truth of God’s judgment…

Why Must God Judge Sin?

Because of the nature of sin
Sin is a transgression of the law of God.
Ø      /Parabasis/ means overstepping, transgression of God’s law
Sin is a failure to conform to the standard of God.
Ø      /Hamartia/ means “miss the mark” (Romans 3:23)
Sin is rebellion against God.
Ø      /Anomia/, which means “lawlessness” (1 John 3:4) and can be described as a “frame of mind.”
Sin is wrongful acts toward God and man.
*Romans 1:18* For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness (Godward) and unrighteousness (manward) of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

Because of the nature of God
God is holy.
Exodus 15:11 "Who /is /like You, O LORD, among the gods?
Who /is /like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
Ø      God’s holiness means that He is absolutely distinct from all His creatures and exalted above them.
Ø      It also means that He is absolutely pure and sinless.
God is just.
Ø      God applies righteous consequences equally to everyone
Job 34:12 “Surely, God will not act wickedly, And the Almighty will not pervert justice.”

Whom Does God Judge?

All men are sinners by nature.
*Psalm 51:5 *Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
Ø      *Romans 5:18, 19 - *Adam is both symbolically and actually the head of the human race!
Ø      We are controlled by sin from birth
*Ecclesiastes 9:3 *… the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil...
Ø      We are contaminated by sin at birth
*Isaiah 64:6 *But we are all like an unclean /thing, /And all our righteousnesses /are /like filthy rags...

All men are sinners by choice.

All men are sinners by practice.
Sin becomes pleasurable
*Hebrews 11:25 *choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,
*Psalm 52:3 *You love evil more than good, Lying rather than speaking righteousness.
Sin becomes binding (Ephesians 2:1‑3; Romans 6:15-23)

What is the Outcome of God’s Judgment?

Perhaps no doctrine is harder to accept emotionally than the doctrine of hell.
Jesus spoke more of hell than any of the prophets or apostles.

Hell is a place of constant, torment, and pain
A place of darkness and separation
*Matthew 22:13* "Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast /him /into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
A place of incredible pain and suffering
Ø      Where the fire is not extinguished
*Mark 9:43* "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched
Ø      Where the worm never dies
*Mark 9:44* "where 'Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.'

Hell is not just the absence of God’s presence it is the presence of His wrath.
*Hebrews 12:29* For our God /is /a consuming fire.

Hell is self-chosen
Those in hell will realize that they sentenced themselves to it
Ø      By loving darkness rather than light,
Ø      By choosing not to have their Creator as their Lord
Ø      By preferring self-indulgent sin to self-denying righteousness
Ø      If they encountered the gospel by rejecting Jesus rather than coming to him
4B.
The torments of hell will be experienced in varying degrees.
*Hebrews 10:28-29* Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
*Matthew 11:22-23* "But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
23 "And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Hell is never-ending.
