What makes the perfect Christmas present? This is a question that has plagued so many of us for many years of gift buying. We want to be sure to get the right gift.
However, after a while, I think we give up on finding the perfect gift and we settle for just getting something that we think the receiver of the gift will enjoy, hopefully longer then the day they received it.
But what makes the perfect gift?
The perfect gift would be memorable. For years afterwards they are still talking about the time they received this gift. It stands out in the mind of the person who received it.
The perfect gift would stand the test of time. Its not broken within an hour of being opened, and it hasn’t lost its shine by week’s end. Not only is it memorable for years to come, it is still being enjoyed for years to come
The perfect gift enhances the life of the person receiving it. Enhancing could mean any number of things. It could inject joy into their life, it could bring peace. It could make work easier, or bring some level of convenience to their life.
I would say enhancing is more then just making someone happy. I said on Sunday that happiness is fleating. We want something that brings lasting enhancement.
To take it to the next level, a truly great gift doesn’t just impact one person. A really outstanding gift changes the lives of a couple, a whole family.
Something that is memorable, something that lasts, something that enhances someone’s life, and the more lives it impacts, the greater the gift must be.
This is why Christmas is one of the most important times of year.
Luke 2:15–18 ESV
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
Matthew 2:9–12 ESV
After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
upon seeing the child, the shepherds go and tell everyone about what they saw. After seeing angels and seeing the new born Messiah, it would be safe to say the shepherds lives were changed. In fact, to see a group of shepherds running through the town, declaring the marvelous things that had happened would have been quite a sight. Shepherds weren’t typically people who liked to call attention to themselves.
the magi, after travelling for months on whim, discovered the promised king of the Jews, and are overwhelmed with exceeding joy. They fall into worship and present gifts to Jesus. Their lives would never be the same.
Anyone in this room, watching online, if you have come into relationship with Jesus, you know that your life has never been the same. You see the world differently, you have experienced a freedom and a joy that you can’t find anywhere else then in Christ. Jesus is the perfect the gift.
That’s why tonight, I want to give you the opportunity to receive the only perfect gift to be given. If you haven’t had the opportunity to have a relationship with Christ, then don’t miss this opportunity. If you received the gift of Christ years ago, but you’re not seeing the joy or peace that I’m talking about, then maybe tonight is your chance to step back and reconnect with Jesus.
As well, tonight we are giving each and every one of you a gift. In the bag, if you haven’t gone through it already, is a New Testament, a little track from Max Lucado, a card with a link to all the bible resources we offer to everyone who comes to OneChurch, and couple candy canes.
If you are accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior for the first time tonight, then this is our gift to you. Enjoy reading and learning as much as you can about the Lord Jesus. If you have questions, I am available to be contacted
If you are follower of Jesus, then we ask you take this gift and pass it along to someone who needs it this season. The best part about the gift of Christ is that it never grows old, and can be given year round.
