Intro: Nothing is impossible with God.

There is nothing our God can not do! He is able to move mountains, part the seas and wind obey his command. The Bible tells us how God took nothing and turned it into all that we know today!
Aim: Trust the Lord in his word and be amazed at his awesome word moving in your life.
DT: God’s power in our life has is more powerful than we can understand and his will is beyond us but he loves enough to include us.

Lead into the text...

The timing in the setting of this account is in relationship to the announcement of John’s miraculous birth.

The same angel, Gabriel, announced to Zacharias that he would have a son and was to name him John. In this account we see how God shows favor on Zacharias and Elizabeth, with her barren womb to behold life.
Luke 1:24–25 NLT
24 Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and went into seclusion for five months. 25 “How kind the Lord is!” she exclaimed. “He has taken away my disgrace of having no children.”

The announcement of the coming King

Luke 1:26–27 NLT
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.

Why this announcement is so important?

Israel is waiting on the coming King in the lineage of David.
Their current king, Herod, is a false king placed by Rome.
Herod, is not of the lineage of David.
This fulfills the prophecy
2 Samuel 7:16 NLT
16 Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’ ”
3. The very mention that she is betrothed to Jospeh, a descendant of King David shows the legal right Jesus will have to the throne by his earthly father.

Mary and Joseph are from Nazareth

Nazareth is not a well known town. The population is not as large as Judah where Zacharias and Elizabeth reside. The humble home of Nazareth is also the place where Jesus spent 30 years of his life before his public ministry in declaring the Kingdom of God and his crucifixion.
God’s sovereign choice of Mary a Virgin and Joseph of the lineage of David.
The fact that Mary was a virgin is to show the great power of God!
The fact that Joseph is of lineage of David is to show the legal right Jesus, as the son of Joseph has to the throne of Israel.

The Gospel introduces the heavenly kingdom announcement

Luke 1:28–33 NLT
28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

God’s Favor on Mary, God’s favor on us

Greetings favored one! The Lord is With you!

God’s joyous announcement is presented with joy.
This same root word in Greek used in the salutation - “greetings” is also found in the word “favored one”.
The joy of receiving a benefit or favor.
This also shows the benevolence of our God to bestow this favor on Mary with out her having to do something to curry favor from God.

The presence of God is always a reason to rejoice!

Luke 1:29–30 NLT
29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God!
The angel has already told her that the lord is wither her!
Luke 1:28 NLT
28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”
The joy of knowing that God is with you should give her reason to rejoice in his presence. Who God has called righteous can stand in his presence.
Psalm 1:5 NLT
5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly.
Sinners can not stand in the presence of God. God’s presence brings forth judgement. Mary is found in favor with God and therefore she finds life in and is blessed to give life to the Son of God!
God’s favor is demonstrated in his acts of love. The messenger, the angel named Gabriel expresses to Mary the Joy of the Lord upon her by encouraging her to not be afraid.

The reason to have joy!

Luke 1:31–33 NLT
31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
You will give birth to a son.
Joy in knowing you have found favor in God to have children.
Your first born will be a son.
You will name him Jesus.
Your Son will be great! How will he be great?!
Your son will be great because He will be the Son of the Most High!
The Lord God will give him the throne of His father David!
Luke 1:33 NLT
33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
Jesus the fulfillment of the promise to King David!
2 Samuel 7:16 NLT
16 Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’ ”

With God Everything is Possible!

This amazing act of God is so wondrous that Mary is marveled by this whole experience and outcome.
Luke 1:34–35 NLT
34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.

The angel tells Mary How!

The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you so the baby will be holy!
This is why the child will be called the Son of God!

The angel gives her confirmation of the work of God!

Luke 1:36 NLT
36 What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month.
The setting of the 6 month shows up here showing the instant timing of God moving in her life!
Elizabeth is now in her sixth month of pregnancy!
God used Elizabeth who was barren and now is six months pregnant with male child.

The fact that God did this for Elizabeth and now for Mary the Angel decides to drop the mic...

Luke 1:37 NLT
37 For the word of God will never fail.”
Luke 1:37 NRSV
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Luke 1:37 NCV
37 God can do anything!”

This is emphatic declaration of the greatness of God!

Another way to see this is to see how God can do all things. Or to know that God’s involvement makes all thins possible! The two demonstrations in our text of an Angel telling a barren women and a virgin they are with both with child. The specific calling on the life of these children is amazing. God’s call is so amazing.

The power of God to save!

God shows us that he is mighty to save.
He worked out our foundation before we were even born.
He told of the coming joy of salvation through Jesus.
The Joy of Jesus birth and life gives us the joy of salvation in his life.
We know eternal life through the eternal King!
Jesus reigns on the throne forever and ever more!
He is king of Kings and Lord of Lords!
The fact that God saves to the utmost is amazing alone.
Jesus saves us from death and gives us life!
Nothing is impossible for God.
The Joy of the Lord is our strength.
We know joy because of God’s favor towards us.
The power of God to reign forever!
The power of God to make a virgin to be with child!

May we too respond like Mary!

Luke 1:38 NLT
38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
Respond in obedience to God’s Word.
Let us walk out God’s truth in our life.
Let us see the saving power of God’s word move in our life.
I am the Lord’s servant.
We must humbly submit to the will of the Lord.
We must trust the words of the Lord for our life and walk out the purpose God has for us.
Know the word of the Lord calls for you to know him as Lord and be redeemed by placing your faith in the Jesus, the son of God born of the virgin Mary born into the lineage of King David and is the rightful eternal king fulfilling the promise of the lord.

Conclusion:

Rejoice in knowing God is with us and his favor is to those who call on the name of the Lord. May we except this precious gift of Jesus, who is King of kings and Lord of lords. May we know the blessing of having a right relationship with Jesus. Let us know the joy of the God’s great love toward us and the awesome power of his saving grace.
