I.       Peace in a chaos of circumstances

(NKJV) Psalm 46 1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

A.     A seeming end of the world

moving, slipping, tottering, sliding, and roaring

1.      Decreation

2.      Disappearing order

3.      Chaos

B.     Foundations shaken

(NKJV) Psalm 46 2 … Even though the earth be removed,

1.      Upheaval

2.      Quake

C.     Heights engulfed in chaos

(NKJV) Psalm 46 2 … And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

1.      Mountains engulfed by the sea

2.      Foundation mountains under the earth quaking -

D.    Fearful attack

(NKJV) Psalm 46 3 Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

1.      Like a wild animal

2.      Roaring and foaming

3.      Violent

4.      Growing intensity – water and earth

5.      Surge – tidal wave

E.     He is our Shelter

(NKJV) Psalm 46 1 … God is our refuge

F.     He is our strength

(NKJV) Psalm 46 1 … and strength,

G.    He is present to help

(NKJV) Psalm 46 1 … A very present help in trouble.

1.      Very near / very assessable - emphasis

H.    No need to fear

(NKJV) Psalm 46 2 Therefore we will not fear,

1.      Confidence in Him

II.    Peace in a chaos of human trouble

A.     Opposition from people

(NKJV) Psalm 46 6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;

1.      Same word as for waters roaring above

2.      Uproar – confused – fearful – mob

3.      Reaction of fearful confusion

B.     He speaks and the trouble is gone

(NKJV) Psalm 46 6 … He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

1.      God’s thunderous outcry is greater  (battle cry)

2.      All the uproar melts away – dissipates

C.     Heaven is at rest

1.      Like a refreshing river

(NKJV) Psalm 46 4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.

a)      Contrast of babbling brook or cold meandering river

b)      Coolness of a brook filled meadow

c)      Life

d)      Freshness

e)      Quietness

f)       Vitality

g)      Joy  in a dry land

h)      Ultimately to be true for Jerusalem

i)        Most High – Elyon – most high – ruler of the universe

j)        Place God dwells

2.      All may shake – but not the place God is

(NKJV) Psalm 46 5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;

a)      Not upended like Mountains above v.2  / nations below v.6

D.    God will help in the midst of the greatest darkness

(NKJV) Psalm 46 5 … God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

a)      – time when hope suddenly springs forth

b)       Egyptians destroyed then / Assyrians destroyed then

E.     God is with us here too

(NKJV) Psalm 46 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

1.      The commander of armies

2.      Personal presence with us

III. An invitation for Peace through faith

A.     An invitation to behold God’s acts

(NKJV) Psalm 46 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has made desolations in the earth.

1.      Invitation to all

2.      Look at the characteristic works of the Lord

3.      Desolations – awesome / terror/wonder

4.      Defeats all opposition

B.     An invitation to personal peace

(NKJV) Psalm 46 10 Be still, and know that I am God;

1.      Let go of striving

2.      Rest in Him

3.      Faith in who He is

C.     God will be exalted

(NKJV) Psalm 46 10 … I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

1.      Begin and end with ‘earth’

2.      Emphasis that God will be exalted here on earth

D.    Peace in dependence

(NKJV) Psalm 46 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

1.      God Jacob – the one who wrestled with Jacob

a)      Brought the trickster to a place of dependence

b)      Broke his self confidence

c)      Crippled but dependent upon God

2.      Book ends ‘God is our refuge’
