Praying for others

Colossians 1:9-12

I.       Praying for help

A.     For those growing in Christ

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask

(NKJV) Colossians 1 3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven,

1.      From moment saved

2.      A passion for God

3.      A love for people

4.      Sharing hope

B.     For those facing attacks

(NKJV) Colossians 2 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

1.      Theological – Truth matters

2.      Practical – theology impacts living

II.    Praying for Others  to Experience His Will

A.     To Discover His will

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9  … that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

1.      Discovered through scripture

2.      Discovered through response to the Spirit

B.     To appreciate God’s great plan for their life

(NKJV) Jeremiah 29 11 For I know the thoughts (plans) that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts (plans) of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

III. Praying for Others  to Live worthy

A.     God’s investment made  them worthy

(NKJV) Colossians 1 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord,

(NKJV) Colossians 1 19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled

B.     Live accordingly

(NKJV) Ephesians 5 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light


 

IV. Praying for others to be source of pleasure to God

A.     Seeking His pleasure

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9 … do not cease to pray for you, and to ask

… 10 that you may walk worthy … fully pleasing Him,

B.     Not grieving Him

(NKJV) Ephesians 4 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 

V.    Praying for others to Bear fruit

A.     Winning others to Christ

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9 … do not cease to pray for you, and to ask

… 10 that you may walk worthy … being fruitful in every good work

(NKJV) Romans 1 13 … I often planned to come to you … that I might have some fruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles.

B.     Transformed behavior (fruit of the Spirit)

(NKJV) Ephesians 5 8 … Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),

(NKJV) Galatians 5 22 … love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. …

VI. Praying for Others  to have intimacy with Him

A.     Experience  intimacy with God

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9 … do not cease to pray for you, and to ask

… 10 that you may walk worthy 10 … and increasing in the knowledge of God;

B.     Progressively grow in that intimacy

(NKJV) Philippians 3 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

VII.          Praying for Others  to appropriate His Power

A.     Strengthened by God

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9 … do not cease to pray for you, and to ask

… 10 that you may walk worthy … 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power,

B.     Power to endure

11 … for all patience and longsuffering

C.     Joy in the struggle

11 … with joy;

VIII.       Praying for Others to  live grateful to God

A.     He qualified us for His blessing

(NKJV) Colossians 1 9 … do not cease to pray for you, and to ask

… 10 that you may walk worthy …  12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

B.     Live in Spirit of gratitude rather than entitlement


 

IX. Prayer

1.      For those growing in Christ
