EYES TO SEE

So the Work of God may be displayed in his life:  Jesus is the Work of God.

The healing of the blind man:

Why doesn’t God do such a work in my life?

I think of Sherry.  Convinced God would heal her.

657 stealing the boys eyes.

Watching my grandmother die of cancer…

Some of you are hanging by a thread – wondering, why doesn’t Jesus come fix this for me?

What happened after this man’s awesome experience? (THIS IS NOT FROM GOD they declare)…interrogated, ridiculed, and thrown out.

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”

38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

39 Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

[1]

Why did  Jesus come to find him?  He had held on to the truth, regardless of what people around him said or threatened…I believe if you hold to him and do not fear…he will come to you and help you to see him more clearly.  Not look for a way out, but look to know him to understand the truth.  Lord, I cant see, help me to see.

I asked the Lord why.  I didn’t get the answer, but I saw Jesus.  In my mind’s eye popped Jesus…I saw Jesus hanging on the cross, embracing my sin, embracing my shame, embracing my torture, embracing my heartache….and he…unlike myself, or my grandmother had done nothing wrong….was completely innocent.

I felt as if the Lord had come to me and said “Chad, I know about pain, I care about your heartache.”  And I feel the Lord asked me in that moment, “But, do you trust in the Son of Man?”

“Who is he Lord, that I might trust in him?”

“You have seen him.  He is the one hanging on the cross for you.  He is the one who died for you.”

“Lord I trust you.  Lord, I believe in you.”  Even though I don’t see why this is happening, or why it is allowed to happen.  Even though I don’t see an end to the troubles or pain, I saw Jesus and there was life..in the midst of death, light in the darkness, hope in sorrow.

Against popular teaching today, Jesus did not come into the world to cause our problems to go away.  Rather, we often find that our initial euphoric experience in Christ is followed by hardships, ridicule, and a host of unknowns, we feel disillusioned, angry, frustrated, betrayed.

But Jesus did not come to make this mans problems go away.  He came for judgment!  Why is this man born blind?  “So that the work of God might be displayed in his life!”  What is the work of God on display in this man’s life?  God’s work is not the healing of his eyes, but person of Christ.  Christ is on display.  Its not a healing that is on display, but the Son of Man…the Messiah…the Savior of the world itself!   The light of the world shines through this mans blind eyes for all the world to see.

Jesus was shining right in front of them, and they couldn’t see him.  They couldn’t see him.  THEY COULDN’T SEE HIM!  But Jesus asked the blind man, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

[2]

Who is he Lord, that I might believe in him.  You are seeing him Jesus said.  The man said, I believe Lord.  And then you know what happened?  The man who could now see Jesus could really see him.  It wasn’t just that he saw him with his eyes, but he saw him with his faith.  I trust you Jesus.  I hope in you Lord.

But those, those who prided themselves in their perception.  Those who were haughty, lifted up, and putting Jesus on trial just before find themselves on trial and Jesus judgment is BLIND!

John 5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

What determines if we are blind or can see?  They looked at Jesus and his work and listened to his words…but couldn’t see who Jesus really was. 1

1 John 5:12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

The work of God, Jesus Christ shining before their very eyes, and they could not see him….they would not see him.  They were blind.  What about you?  Do you see Jesus?

Video

The question is not whether we see life unfolding according to our expectations….

The question what do you see when you look at Jesus?  Do you really see him?

Do you see God’s work in the world to save you and bring you home?

Do we follow him in faith?

Do we trust him through trials?

Do we live, because he lives?

Praise God, he lives.  He lives this morning.  If you want to live in him, if this morning you have seen Jesus.  We implore you to come and receive the life he has died to give you.  Do not allow your guilt to remain.  Do not look at Jesus and look away.  Though the world does not see him, we see him and we invite you to be immersed into Christ and join us here as we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith.
