We are on our third session of -
MAKE HOLINESS GREAT AGAIN.
In Review - there is nothing wrong with the doctrine of holiness, it is our perception or faulty understanding of what holiness is I am trying to address.
This series is working from a Biblical foundation based upon a three legged stool - You need all three of these legs or it won't stand properly -
1.) The first leg in making holiness great again is to gain a proper perspective of the Holiness of God.
- We finished this section last week - We tried to show Biblically that the Holiness of God is shown in two ways
He is COMPLETELY OTHER - HIGH AND LIFTED UPHe is COMPLETELY PURE -
2,) The Second leg in making holiness great again is to gain a proper perspective what holiness is
- We begin this section today. I want to take a Biblical survey of how the words of holiness are used in the Bible. While there are many - we will look at just one aspect of the word translated Sanctify/sanctified/sanctifies/ - now I will not cover every part of this word today.
3.) The Third leg in making holiness great again is to gain a proper perspective of how God makes unholy men holy.
READ - Genesis 2:1-3 & Hebrews 4:1-9
As we read Genesis 2:1-3 I want us to notice that there are two things special about this seventh day.
1.) The first - God blessed it - Blessed means "God speaking good to the said thing." Three times God has 'blessed' a part of creation.
Day 5 He blessed the fish and birds 1:22Day 6 He blessed mankindDay 7 - God blesses the seventh day - He enters into rest - We will talk more about what that means later. This triple blessing symbolizes perfection.
The Second - God sanctified it - Means Consecrated or Set it apart as different from the other six days. (Hmmm that sound familiar - Didn't we talk about God being set apart as completely different from any other? )
The Principle of Firsts Mention - Holiness seems to be what Hermeneutic Professors call a Progressive Principles. God mentions it and then with time and revelation expounds on it more fully.
In this morning's survey of holiness through the Old Testament we will see a progressive revelation of holiness. First mention in the Bible - Gen. 2:1-3 The Sanctified Seventh Day. (The Hebrew word used here, is the word we get "Sabbath" from it means to cease. God did absolutely no creating on the seventh day. No other part Genesis 2:1-3 is called "Holy" or "Sanctified" I think it is very significant that this word is used for a concept of time and not to space. Now this sanctified seventh day was made for man - not man for it. There is a whole other sermon on the Lord's day and it's uses and abuses and we might deal with that another time. But God didn't need to rest - he didn't exhaust himself during the six days of work. God doesn't need to recoup himself, relax, or sleep. It simply means he "ceased from work" "The ancient reader would have without hesitation recognized this passage as a "temple text" meaning "Deity rests in a temple, and only in a temple. This is what temples were built for. We might even say that this is what a temple is -- a place for divine rest.." What is this divine rest? Most of us think of rest as a disengagement from tasks, labor, cares. Sleeping, rest, a Sunday afternoon nap. But in the day when this was being spoken to the children of Israel - they would have thought of rest as "what results when a crisis has been resolved, or stability achieved, when things have settled down" Quotes from John H. In Conclusion - This rest was not for God alone - But is extended to us Hebrews 4 - The writer gives us the Rest of the New Testament They tell how the Old Testament people missed it - referring to the Promised Land as the rest. They entered in because of the hardness of their heart - their unbelief The writer also tells us - there remaineth a rest for the people of God - The offer is open to us Read "Oh Sweet Rest" #110 ??? (2) New Testament -- This holiness symbolism is not confined to the Old Testament. We follow with six pictures from the New.
1. The two rests (Matt. 11:28-30). This passage speaks of two rests for the soul. They are different "rests," obtained in different ways and at different times. The first rest. a. It is offered to the unconverted. The word "come" unmistakably teaches the fact of moral distance. b. This rest is
"given." "I will give you rest." c. It is obtained by coming to Christ. The second rest. What John Wesley called "The Second Blessing," his brother called "that Second Rest." This is the "rest" of Heb. 4-5. a. It is "found." The first rest was "given." b. It is obtained by consecration and faith.
"Take my yoke, . . ."; "learn of me . . ."
2. Lazarus: Life -- then liberty (John 11:20-45). Lazarus dead is a type of the sinner.
Lazarus brought to life is a type of the regenerated man. Lazarus set free is a type of the sanctified man.
8. Catherine Booth: Known to the world as "The Mother of the Salvation Army." Mrs.
Booth's testimony is full of interest. It was some time after her marriage that she entered into this experience. Her chief failing had been irritability, and she longed for a constantly sweet disposition. She devoted all she could of two days to waiting before God. The word, "Now are ye clean through the word I have spoken unto you," was applied to her heart, and as her confidence waxed bold, she was enabled to reckon herself to be "dead indeed unto sin." "I did not feel much rapturous joy, but perfect peace -the sweet rest which Jesus had promised to the heavy laden. I have understood the apostle's meaning when he said, 'We who believe do enter into rest.' Two or three very trying things occurred on Saturday, which at another time would have excited impatience, but I was kept by the power of God through faith unto full salvation" (Men and Women of Deep Piety, p. 36-37).
