History of come all ye faithful
“O Come All Ye Faithful”
was originally written in Latin “Adeste Fideles” and is attributed to John Francis Wade, an 18th-century hymnist., though the English “O Come All Ye Faithful” translation was by Frederick Oakeley in 1841.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
O come all ye Faithful……Joyful……Triumphant
When in fact many time we feel the opposite-
doubtful….depressed….defeated
Maybe you struggle on the faithful side:
Maybe you struggle on the Joyful side
Maybe it's in the joyful side of things. I don't know if you're like me, but joy can get sucked out of a room really quick. I don't enjoy shopping all that much to begin with, but anybody who goes shopping this time of year, it can be a trial and a tribulation for you!
Maybe you struggle on the Triumphant side
Maybe it's in being triumphant, a word we don't actually use a whole lot today because many times we feel more defeated, don't we? We look on at our finances and we're like, I thought I'd be in a better position than I am today and I just don't feel triumphant in that!
Or maybe it's in your marriage and you're like, I figured that after 20 years that I would be at a different place in marriage than we are. How did we get here? And you can feel much more defeated.
Here is what I have noticed in my life, that if i learn to become faithful and lean on the faithfulness of God then the joyful and triumphant part will take care of itself.
What is faithfulness
What does Faithfulness look like
Hebrews 2:17 NLT
Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.
A. the faithfulness of Jesus and he will never be unfaithful to us
2 Timothy 2:13 NLT
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
Deuteronomy 7:9 NLT
Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.
3. Four Characteristics of faithfulness
A. The faithful hold onto God’s truth
Revelation 2:25 NLT
except that you hold tightly to what you have until I come.
i. truths to hold on to
the Bible is the authoritative guide for how to live
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NLT
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
People are more important than things
Matthew 6:19–21 NLT
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
what happens in me is more important than what happens to me
Philippians 1:6 NLT
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Romans 8:28 NLT
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
B. The Faithful persevere through difficulty
Mark 11:23 NLT
I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.
C. The Faithful keep their commitment
Matthew 25:21 NLT
“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’
4. Jesus helps up become more faithful
Hebrews 12:2 NLT
We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
Romans 10:17 NLT
So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.
Isaiah 43:2–3 NLT
When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt as a ransom for your freedom; I gave Ethiopia and Seba in your place.
