Intro

Isaiah 9:1–7 ESV
1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Prince of Peace

Advent this week is focusing on looking forward to the Prince of Peace
Isaiah 9:6
But before to appreciate this title we first need to understand what the original recipients heard/ felt.

Isaiah 9:1-2 Dark to Light

Isaiah 9:1 ESV
1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
“There will be no gloom for her who is in anguish.”
This is a dramatic change in the tone of this word from God!!!
Chapter 8: Coming Assyrian Invasion
Isaiah 8:5–8 ESV
5 The Lord spoke to me again: 6 “Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, and rejoice over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, 7 therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them the waters of the River, mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks, 8 and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, reaching even to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.”
God uses a flooding river illustrate how Assyria will invade Judah. (Southern Kingdom)
Invasion will be total and unstoppable.
“In the former time...”
Zebulun & Nephtali
“Contempt”
Northern Kingdom
Wicked as they come.
Enemies of God & Judah
“…but in the latter time...”
Made glorious the land by the sea...
2 Important Questions:
Where is will this take place?
When will this take place?
Answer is found in the book of Matthew.
Jesus just starting his earthly ministry.
John the baptist has just been arrested.
Matthew 4:12–16 ESV
12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”
The Where is Capernaum
The when is during Jesus’ earthly ministry.

Summarize Isaiah 9:1-2

One People!!!
Isaiah is speaking to JUDAH (Southern Kingdom)
Isreal (Northern Kingdom) has completely checked out!!! Wicked People.
Isaiah give this horrible prophesy to Judah about an Assyrian Invasion.
But then talks about this restoration that will come…(wait for it)
IN THE NORTHERN KINGDOM!!!
DON”T MISS THIS
God was speaking to a divided kingdom as one whole.
It was a message of restoration and unity
When makes a promise HE MAKES IT!!!
What God destroys God can restore!!!
Summary of this texts...

THE MESSIAH IS COMING!!!!

Then Isaiah gives a reminder to this (likely bewildered Judah)...
Reminding them WHO GOD IS!!!!
Isaiah 9:3 ESV
3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
This is a divided kingdom
Judah is facing certain destruction.
Who can restore this?!!!!
THE SAME ONE WHO ESTABLISH IT BLESSED IT TO BEGIN WITH!!!!
The Isaiah gives...
justification for such a claim.
But also a DESCRIPTION of what this restoration will be like.
THREE “FOR” - because
Isaiah 9:4 ESV
4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
The Yoke & burden placed on you will be broken.
Median -
God called up Gideon to lead an army.
Medianites
Army 34K to 300.
Total victory TO GOD’S GLORY.
Isaiah 9:5 ESV
5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
“Every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult.
tumult: noise of large group of men (army at war)
That Boot Represent a Person.
Leaving Haifa Israel a helicopter crash into the Mediterranean Sea.
Divers Collected section of the items from the bottom.
Placed them on the hanger bay in the our ship.
Among the items were the empty boots of the crew of the helicopter.
THOSE BOOT REPRESENTED PEOPLE.
Jesus was using warriors boot to symbolize his people.
who have known war but would find peace.
Every boot of a warrior & every garment rolled in blood
Would be used a fuel for the fire
They wouldn’t need them any more!!! PEACE FOREVER
So when will this take place?
Already establish Isaiah’s prophesy about Jesus
But have they known this kind of lasting peace?
Holy Mountain - Isaiah 2:2
Millennial Reign
Isaiah 11:1 - Jesus
Isaiah 11:6-9 - millennial reign.
We will know times of SITUATIONAL peace
“I have more peace today then yesterday.”
This is NOTHING compared to the ULTIMATE PEACE that God has promised to deliver when Christ returns.
NOW we are ready to read verse 6!!!!
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
God promised peace to His people
Brought by the Prince of Peace.
That peace is ETERNAL
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ
You have been adopted into the family of God
Jesus is Your Prince of Peace.

When you think about the peace of God, what comes to mind?

Let’s consider the typical prayer
Ok maybe stereotypical)
We KNOW that God wants us to bring ALL prayer to Him.
If you have ANY problem or worry and you are NOT going to God...
You are suffering needlessly!!!
But what focus does the typical prayer have?
Totally focused on TODAY.
Kingdom prayer of applies to today but looks at the eternal promise of peace.
Above all else we are called to Glorify God.
As you pray for peace.
Search deeper in your heart.
Is your desire to Glorify God
Or pacify yourself.
