Drawing a conclusion

What? A conclusion at the onset of a lesson, really? As we start this morning a look back at what we know about the importance of resurrection already.
The message preached was of first importance and it centered on the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1Cor15:1-11)
Let me share just a few of those verses with you.
1 Corinthians 15:1–2 NASB95
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
The message preached was of first importance, he died for our sins, and was raised on the 3rd day according to the scripture (so, He was resurrected).
Our hope, our assurance in what we believe (1Cor15:12-19)
Again just a highlight out of this passage
1 Corinthians 15:16–17 NASB95
16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
1 Corinthians 15:18–19 NASB95
18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
Drawing an obvious conclusion as we lead into Paul’s continue look at the resurrection of the body.
I found this from Warren Wiersbe and it is better than I could put it.
“Why be a Christian if we have only suffering in this life and no future glory to anticipate? The resurrection is not just important; it is ‘of first importance,’ because all that we believe hinges on it.”
Resurrection defined =a dead body coming back to life (see Rom8:11, 8:23)
Romans 8:11 NASB95
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
and add in
Romans 8:23 NASB95
23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
Hold onto that phrase “first fruits” that will come into play, examination more as we go this morning.
(Transition) Our passage this morning is going on to Paul further expanding on the resurrection, using several illustrations that would make perfect sense to the Corinthians (Gentiles) as wells as the Jews (being Christian Jews )
So may we look at
Resurrection affects us all (1Cor15:20-24)
Resurrection: Christ’s fulfilled Ps110 (1Cor15:25-28)
Resurrection and common sense (1Cor15:29-34)

Resurrection affects us all

If our conclusion is correct that resurrection is of “first importance” we can then conclude through logic it affects us all. That is what Paul is going to continue to develop in our passage.
1 Corinthians 15:20–21 NASB95
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:22–23 NASB95
22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
1 Corinthians 15:24 NASB95
24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
First and foremost of us is to glean from the scripture when we are doing a study.
Question: What is Paul’s fact stated in (v.20)?
Christ has been raised from the dead.
Question: How did both death and resurrection come (v.21)?
By man
Question: According to (v.22) something happens to all in Adam, and something else happens to all in Christ, what is it?
In Adam all die, In Christ all will be made alive (in other words resurrected).
Question: There is an order to things in (v.23) What is the order?
First, is Christ, followed by those who are Christ’s at His coming.
You are doing good, and we are pulling just from the scripture at this point, we will be going into it more in a few.
Question: What comes after the order in (v.23) that you see in (v.24)?
The end comes, the kingdom is handed over to the Father.
All rule and authority and power are abolished.
I mentioned first fruits a few minutes ago, maybe you have heard the term before today, let me give some of where it comes from before you saw it in (v.23).
Establishment of firstfruits (Lev23:9-11)
Leviticus 23:9–10 NASB95
9 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land which I am going to give to you and reap its harvest, then you shall bring in the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest.
Leviticus 23:11 NASB95
11 ‘He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord for you to be accepted; on the day after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
This is known as offering of first fruits and the wave offering as commanded by God through the prophet Moses.
From the Priests the firstfruits said God all the harvest is Yours!
From Jesus that all the harvest is God’s. this is the believers (vv.23-24)
God’s promise that one day we will raised up and presented as the harvest to the Lord too.
To the believer death in the body is only temporary, the soul, spirit live on and the body will be resurrected one day.
As a reminder on your own you may look at (2Cor5:1-8 or Php1:21-23) to look at and see to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!
The harvest outweighs the firstfruits, and think about that day when the harvest is presented to the Father!

Resurrection: Christ’s fulfilled Ps110

Prophesy fulfilled in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, may we look at both, our passage and Ps110 and see what we can see and learn.
1 Corinthians 15:25–26 NASB95
25 For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.
1 Corinthians 15:27–28 NASB95
27 For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. 28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
Gleaning fro the scripture:
Question: Who must reign until His enemies under his feet, and, what is the last enemy (vv.25-26)?
Jesus must reign, until the last enemy death is abolished.
Question: This one may be a little tougher question, in looking at (v.27, 28) there is He and His who is it or are they?
He is God the Father, His is Jesus the Son. The Father put all things in subjection under Jesus feet.
Now before bringing in Ps110, there are many thoughts, opinions on the prophetic word and God’s prophetic program found here and in Ps110, but the major truths are see, Jesus Christ reigns today from heaven and all authority is under His feet (can see Eph1:15-23 too)
David in the Psalm is foretelling of what Christ would be.
Psalm 110:1–2 NASB95
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” 2 The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
Psalm 110:3–4 NASB95
3 Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew. 4 The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalm 110:5–6 NASB95
5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath. 6 He will judge among the nations, He will fill them with corpses, He will shatter the chief men over a broad country.
Psalm 110:7 NASB95
7 He will drink from the brook by the wayside; Therefore He will lift up His head.
What we can see, draw from this psalm is:
Jesus is the king who defeats all enemies (vv.1-3)
Jesus is the priest, eternal, of the order of Melchizedek (vv.4-5)
Jesus is the judge (vv.6-7)
(below for outline only, not to be said)
Ps110 points out the king (vv.1-3); the priest (vv.4-5) and the judge (vv.6-7) - Jesus by His resurrection and promise fulfills these things.
Jesus as king, priest and judge one day will hand us over to the Father (1Cor15:24, 28) the us is further described in (Rom8:29-30)
1 Corinthians 15:24 NASB95
24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.
and
1 Corinthians 15:28 NASB95
28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all.
now to the Roma passage
Romans 8:29–30 NASB95
29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
Who is the predestined, the conformed, the called, the justified, the glorified? - it is the church! The redeemed!
(Transition) Now this leads us to resurrection and common sense

Resurrection and common sense

Resurrection of the human body is a future event that has implications on or life today. If the resurrection, the hope of the resurrection, is not true, we can forget the future and live as we choose right now.
1 Corinthians 15:29–30 NASB95
29 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them? 30 Why are we also in danger every hour?
1 Corinthians 15:31–32 NASB95
31 I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. 32 If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.
1 Corinthians 15:33–34 NASB95
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
Gleaning from the scripture:
Question: In reading (v.29) what conclusion can you draw that was a practice going on in Corinth
They were practicing baptism for the dead.
Question: what did Paul state as a fact in (v.30)?
We too are in danger every hour
Question: Paul makes two very bold statements in (vv.32, 33) can you pick them out?
What does it profit me if the dead are not raised (v.32)
Bad company corrupts good morals (v.33)
Question: In (v.34) there is a strong admonition (which is to give instruction) what is it?
Become sober-minded, stop sinning!
(Transition) Now lets talk about common sense when it comes to resurrection.
First a reminder, what is the definition of resurrection again, do you remember? - a dead body coming back to life.
Common sense and bodily resurrection.
Baptism for the dead (v.29); why do it? They wanted a dead body to come back to life.
Baptism for the dead: why do it if there was no resurrection?
Biblical examples, description of resurrection of the body (1Cor15:38, 15:42; 1The4:14-16, 5:2)
In 15:38 we see resurrection gives it a body
1 Corinthians 15:38 NASB95
38 But God gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own.
The perishable raised imperishable
1 Corinthians 15:42 NASB95
42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body;
The order
1 Thessalonians 4:14–15 NASB95
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 NASB95
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Purpose to preserve the body, soul and spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NASB95
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If there is no resurrection why put yourself in harms way every day (1Cor15:30-32)
If there is no resurrection may has well eat, drink and be merry (1Cor15:32; Isa22:13)
Isaiah 22:13 NASB95
13 Instead, there is gaiety and gladness, Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, Eating of meat and drinking of wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”
Isaiah was warning the of impending judgment, we too need to be prepared for final judgment to come too, we cannot take the resurrection lightly
Paul calls for them to not be deceived (1Cor15:33)
1 Corinthians 15:33 NASB95
33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”
For the the bad company was the heavy influence from the Greek culture and philosophy that they did not believe in a resurrection and lived each day to the fullest, they had an Epicurean Philosophy “eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.”
Paul calls for the to return to the truth (1Cor15:34)
1 Corinthians 15:34 NASB95
34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.
Well in short order gives the admonition and maybe it will bring you back to where this started back in 1Cor15:1-4 “of first importance”.
(summary to close) Adam’s life and Christ’s life affect everyone. Those in Christ find hope in the resurrection, those in Adam only can hope in death. One day the believers, the harvest of the first fruits will be handed over to the Father, may we be ready, looking, longing, waiting for that great day!
