THREE AREAS OF DISCERNMENT

Right & Wrong. God calls for us to distinguish between good from evil and make the proper choices according to the Word of God (Heb. 5:13-14).
Gray Areas. God calls for us to determine what tasks, actions, and choices bring glory to God (1 Cor. 10:31; Phil. 1:9-10).
Life Events. God calls for us to process the events in our lives to see if or what He is trying to show us (Ac. 10:9-16, 17-23, 29, 34, 46-48). Those close to God want to make sure their actions and decisions fall in line with God’s will.

THREE FACTS ABOUT DISCERNMENT

It is easier to see God in the rearview mirror than through the windshield (Ac. 11:16-18). This means we typically see God’s involvement in our lives when we look back at what He did as opposed to what He is about to do (Gen. 50:20).
If you’re looking for a direct sign from God you likely will not receive one (Ac. 10:17, 21, 29, 34, 46-48). Although both Peter and Cornelius received visions, neither received direct information from God (cp. Ac. 9:6).
Faith and action go hand in hand when seeking God’s will (Ac. 10:4-8, 19-23). We should patiently and prayerfully seek counsel from the Lord and mature Christians so as to have peace when making final decisions (Ps. 37:4).

THREE HELPS FOR DISCERNING

Ask God for wisdom (Jas. 1:5). How is your relationship with God? Have you prayed about it? 3 God speaks to us: through His word, people, and prayer.
Be prayerful and patient with the process (Jas. 1:2-4). Search the Scriptures, seek wise counsel, be patient, and pray through the decision at hand.
Expect God to answer (Jas. 1:6). If your request is outside of the will of God, you have your answer (Jas. 4:3). If you’ve asked God for wisdom and submitted to His will, believe He will give you wisdom and discernment.
