Exhortations to the Church – A Study in Ephesians The Put Off – Put On Principle (Ephesians 4:20-24) Ephesians 4:20-24 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. I. Put Off – C. In True Romans 5:17; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:21 D. In True 1 Thessalonians 4:7; 1 Corinthians 3:17; Ephesians 1:4 j Examples of this put off/put on principle: • Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another. . Romans 12:2 III. Put On - Put off corrupt speech, put on edification (building up): Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 1 Corinthians 15:33; Hebrews 3:13 Ephesians 4:23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, Put off stealing, put on hard work: Ephesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Colossians 3:9 II. Put off lying, put on speaking the truth: Application: • We need to identify what actions/habits in our lives are sinful and choose to lay those aside, to stop doing them. • We need to to think with a renewed mind, that we understand an affirm God's truth, that it is good, acceptable and perfect. • We need to replace the old sinful actions with actions that please God.
