Obsess Much

In order to grasp our priorities we have to understand them;

So let’s start with a definition of obsess so that we are all on the same page;

Concise Oxford English Dictionary Obsess

■ verb preoccupy continually or to a troubling extent.

▶ be constantly worrying about something.

We all obsess over things and maybe even people;

We choose how we prioritize things in our day an in our life - be it fun stuff, worrisome stuff or serious stuff - you choose the priority;

Now there are thing that always take priority - things we just can’t let go of, things that consistently grab our focus;

When this continually happens that “thing” becomes an obsession and sometimes begins to run your life;

Now while Jesus is using the example of food and clothing the application can many things;

Jesus makes this point clear in v. 32, stop acting like the unfaithful;

The Gentiles were more focused on their needs than the Provider, how about you?

Christ First

Where does Christ fall on your list of priorities;

Now I had a few people, with out knowing, write down three top priorities in their life - let’s see what they wrote;

We all have different thoughts about priorities or maybe classifications - work, family, friends, church and so forth - but Christ should at least make the top three in whatever category we are in;

Where is He at while you sit here in church today;

A pastor was preaching a sermon one day, and he thought it was a pretty good one. He looked down and happened to notice his wife furiously taking notes on the note page provided by the church. After the service, he asked her what she thought of the message. “Oh. Well, I didn’t really pay attention,” she answered. “What do you mean?” he responded. “I saw you taking all those notes!” “Oh that, that was just me making a grocery list,” she said. So often it seems that we approach worship, and even the life of faith, with, at best, partial attention.

Let’s, as normal, let the Bible direct us about our priorities in Exodus 20:3;

Could it be possible that because our priorities are mixed up that is why our lives are full of worry?

Worry Much

There was a gentleman named Mr. James at our former church and he use to ask Kaye how she was doing, she would sometimes answer just a little worried about things Mr. James. He response was always the same there is no need to worry;

Now I know and completely understand that is easier to say don’t worry than it is to not worry;

But here Jesus is telling us that we should not worry, v. 34;

Jesus did not prohibit planning for the future, but he did prohibit worrying about it. He urged his disciples instead to focus on the challenges of the present.
