Principles for Purity

Ponder sin’s pathway. Delight in God.

Ponder sin’s pathway

How?
Discern temptation (vs. 3-4 &22)
It will enslave you.
Transition: James 1:13-15 tells us… which takes us to the next answer of how to ponder sin’s pathway and maintain wisdom’s purity.
James 1:13–15 ESV
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Count the cost (vs. 5-6 &23)
Dishonor. Loosing everything. Death bed of total regret.
When tempted with sexual sin, we should consider the end. Sin may be pleasurable for a brief moment, but then what? Where will this lead? Where will this sin end?
It reminds me of an old quote that sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.
Flee sexual sin (vs. 8)
I Cor 6:18 tells us…
1 Corinthians 6:18 ESV
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
b. Transition: One of the great deceptions of sexual sin is the tendency to think that it is hidden. Or to think that no one else is impacted except the one committing the sin. This mindset is a selfish delusion. The pride of entitlement. We would do well to keep in mind when fleeing from sexual sin verse 21 of Proverbs 5. (Read) Which takes us to our second principle of purity.

Delight in God

How?
God’s provision of marriage. (vs. 15-16)
Rejoice in the blessing of your spouse. (vs. 18-19)
There is no true satisfaction for intimacy outside of God’s provision. (vs. 20)
Marriage
Remind you of our membership statement of faith concerning Family where it says, “Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime...”
Singleness (see the provision of gift in I Cor 7:7)
Both are God’s provision.
God’s provision of Christ.
We read I Corinthians 6:18 regarding the admonition to flee sexual immorality, however now I want you to notice the context of that verse in I Cor 6:9-11 & 19-20
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 ESV
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
b. You may be realizing today that you are enslaved by sexual sin. Jesus hold the key to set you free. You can be forgiven and made right with God. How? Delight in God’s provision for your sin. See Is 53:10
Isaiah 53:10 ESV
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
As we are told in Hebrews 10:21-22 … We can be made pure by the blood of Christ.
Hebrews 10:21–22 ESV
and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Have I been made pure in Christ? Am I maintaining purity through Christ?
