The Second Step Toward God is Confession
Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Psalm 51 – a Psalm of confession – Confession is the first act towards repentance. Taking responsibility. Confession leads to forgiveness, something we all seek, and the theme of Psalm 51.
In order to receive forgiveness we need Love, Cleansing, Blood, and Repentance. Without these there is no forgiveness.
1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
a. God’s mercies stem from His love – 1 Corinthians 13:8 “Charity never faileth:” Love never fails!
2. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
a. There must be a cleansing – 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
a. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9.
4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
a. Today, we are cleansed by the blood – Hebrews 9:22 “…without the shedding of blood is no remission.”
b. We are washed in the word; we are washed in the blood.
8. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Colossians 2:14
10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
a. This is where being Born Again comes into play.
11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
a. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7.
i. Walk in the Spirit; be Led by the Spirit; Live in the Spirit.
13. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
a. David is just one example of God’s forgiveness of our sins.
14. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
a. I cannot praise God until I know that I have His forgiveness.
16. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
a. True repentance!
18. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
Themes: Forgiveness; forgive me.
· Love – verse 1 – 1 Corinthians 13:8 “Charity never faileth:” Love never fails!
· Cleansing – Verse 2 – 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
· Blood – verse 2 – Hebrews 9:22 “…without the shedding of blood is no remission.”
· Repentance – verses 3-4 – Acts 3:19 “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”
Without these, there is no forgiveness. Without forgiveness there is no peace. For man is fallen and only God can restore him.
What is it that you need today, Repentance, Confession, or Forgiveness?
Close / Pray
Mankind today is quick to fall in love but even quicker to fall out. God, on the other hand, so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son… Thought He was rejected, spit upon, beaten, and eventually crucified, God’s love remains.
Here’s a Truth in our seeking God’s forgiveness, as a child of God, you have already been forgiven.
